The Official Game of Thrones [A Song of Ice and Fire] Thread (includes spoilers)

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I've come to realize that most tv shows are like rock stars- if they die young, they stay immortal and become legendary because they don't stick around long enough for their inspiration and creativity to wane and start mailing in their performances/going through the motions.

It's too bad that once they realized that Martin would never deliver the book on-time that they should have just ended it there. Seems like the fans were given a rather shortened stick the last 2 years.

Most writers know how to start a show or a movie. Alot of them even know how to fill in the middle but it comes very apparent when watch movies that are 5 or 6's on IMDb. There is a big gap between someone who can at least give a decent 3rd act/ending and ones that just have no clue how to end something. Every incremental rise in IMDb rating of movies really shows this.

With tv shows though, most aren't asked to pitch more than the general pilot and how they can keep it going. This is why a pilot alot of times ends up one of the best episodes of a show. Not until recently have writers and producers really pitched shows as a whole storyline. It's because networks and cable TV really didn't want a show that would end. Netflix and the push for prestige tv have allowed shows that would have a limited span.

I think HBO probably wanted 10 year and 100+ episodes out of Game of Thrones. It just doesn't seem like the showrunners/writers or actors wanted that after their initial contract was up.

Just to add to my point above, in terms of the spinoffs, I think they will try to flush out the pilot then get the casting right then we might not hear much about Bloodmoon (the code name for the pilot that is going to shot soon).

My guess HBO will actually get the writers, potential showrunners, GRRM, and producers to flush out a skeleton of what the whole show will be and how many seasons they need. Then HBO will green light it and get everyone under contract for that time period.

As for other spinoffs especially the ones from characters in game of thrones. I was listening to the watch podcast from the ringer and Andy Greenwald brought up a good point. That the spinoffs could be mini series like 10 episodes for Arya going West. I also thought they could be like vice principals where they got two seasons but it was all shot at one time and it was one complete story.

I'm skeptical of these spinoffs. I mean, GOT was great because of the source material written by GRRM. And not just the intricate plotting, but the dialogue is well.

I'm not sure that quality transfers to a spinoff just because it is set in the same physical world.

Well somehow they stopped them before without killing them.....

Lol I can never rewatch this series again knowing all of the fantasy/magical plotlines go nowhere.

Yeah probably magic. We know Magic returned with the Dragons, so Magic I guess.

Apparently GRRM is having a heavy hand in writing this first spinoff, which is a good and bad thing.

Good because the quality should be pretty solid in the writing.
Bad because it's less time for him to write the story we all want to see the ending to.

He may have a heavy hand in writing the pilot, but that can't be the case for the rest of the show.

Have zero interest in any stupid spinoff.

I think I will sign the petition to remake season 8. Not because I think they will.

Because I want as many signatures possible, as a big fuck you to Dumb & Dumber for ruining the entire series.

There's no way, because on his blog he said he's going to be involved in like 7 shows? Some of them having nothing to do with Westeros. A few History channel ones. I take it documentaries.

How is he even going to finish the books? Reading his blog, it really doesn't sound like he's in any hurry.

He's got way too many tv deals lined up.

Read the EW article and there's really nothing in there. Just mostly speculation.

Like they say D&D aren't doing any interviews on episode 6 but.....how could they know they won't do them in, like, 2 weeks?

Also said D&D had this ending planned for years but...again, how could they know if D&D aren't doing any interviews lol? All of the actors make it clear they're kept very in the dark the entire time.

Then speculated that this might not be Martin's ending based on his blog post and it was just...a lot of speculating w/o any sourcing.

The only useful thing in it was Emilia Clarke saying, when she read the script that she stunned because "it came out of fucking nowhere."

So, ya know. The actress who played the character at no point thought her character was capable of that.

Can't wait for Star Wars without the force.

I think we will at least get some more questions answered in the special making of that airs this Sunday. It slotted to take up 2 hours.

This is where it will be important for them to really get the right writers room. Some writers are great at writing in their own voice and making original stories then there are alot of writer that are good at taking a flushed out story from a room and writing it in the tone of another writer.

They really need George RR Martin and whoever is going to be the showrunner and head writer flush out the skeleton of the story. Then have a real writers room fill in the body. The problem with the last few seasons of game of thrones was D&D with like two other people were trying create the scripts for all these stories.

Yea I actually want to see them interviewed. Like, a serious interview. Not a prop guy like Conan O'Brien.

That's really all I'm interested in. Everyone, otherwise, is just gonna say what needs to be said to save face. HBO is handing out large checks. No one is gonna step outta line.

Is it the first long Night one?

I'm mildly curious just to see how they explain their way around the NIght King problem.

I mean Old Nan tells us that during the first Long Night that children lived and died in their castles in darkness.

But...how??Because if that thing was alive, how did ANYONE live a full life? It would seem that he'd only need a year or two to kill everyone south of the wall?????

Well, I suppose one issue is that he may not have had nearly as many fellow WW back then. It's possible he was the only one, which might make it much harder for him to raise a significant number of wights.

He and his wights may have been more of boogeyman force than world-enders.
