Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Living in Phoenix I have a ton of friends into sports but they follow other teams, they all love Baker, just think he is a leader. Its actually weird how many really like him, even my friend who coaches college football and is from KC and a HUUUUGE Chiefs fan loves Baker, he also loves Mahomes, but Baker he thinks is 2nd to him over any other QB not about to retire. (Brees and Brady.)

Then I have a friend who is a High School football coach, former all conference college rb, he is a huuuuge Cowboys fan, and loves Baker. He is the grumpiest guy I know and likes no one...but he loves himself some Baker.

I mean others that don't live in NE Ohio, how do people you talk to that are huge sports fans talk about Baker, I mean almost across the board they seem to really like him.

Lee, you're trying, trying to tell us, tell us, something, I can just feel it, feel it...:chuckle:

I didn't like the Rivers comparison, I have met some people out here involved in football in different ways since Phoenix is such a professional work out town with so many people involved in sports out here. Example, my buddy rented his house out to Shazier and 3 other Steelers who were in town to work out together with a couple of pros. (this was before the tragic injury)

Anyway, I wear my Browns shirts around, talk to my friends, start a convo at a bar, and it all is different This isn't some talented asshole like Rivers that some people like or hate. Across the board people love Baker. They love the Fire, the no excuse, the accuracy, arm talent.

It really feels different and I live in a town full of people that are involved in sports professionally and most are not browns fans...heck most are football fans first, and then fans of teams 2nd.

Where is this sports nirvana?

Rush Sports, EXOS, but there are personal trainers galore out here, I used to work with this ex pro body builder (still into it but now 50), and he trains at some fancy gym where pro athletes come to train. Gordon was out here training a couple of offseason ago for example.

Regarding this whole Cowherd thing... my initial thoughts to Baker's latest antics nearly produced a painful facepalm. Why is Baker feeding this guy? If anything, it seems like he's living rent-free in Baker's head.

But then I started thinking... what does it matter from Baker's perspective? Baker's career and measure of success lies solely in NFL games. Social media and broadcasting and all of that sort doesn't matter at all. As long as Baker plays well on the field he will ALWAYS have a strong career. Maybe it leads to deep playoff runs or a Super Bowl or multiple Super Bowls. Regardless, no amount of social media chatter will impact his career, even if some fans get tired of it.

On the other hand, Cowherd's success lies solely in his sports analysis and broadcasting. His reputation and career is on the line throughout this scuffle with Baker. Sure, perhaps it has increased right now - but how long before people just get sick of it? How many casual fans will start to hop on the 'anti-media' bandwagon in support of Baker, or at the very worst, decide to ignore both? Short-term this might be good for Cowherd but I'm not sure it will be long-term. People will get tired of it ESPECIALLY if Baker is having success on the field. We all know Cowherd is a trash analyst but his ratings/success comes off the backs of casual fans who don't know or find him entertaining. How long will that last?

Cowherd's probably getting a ratings injection right now but I don't know if it'll sustain for a long time.

The "feud" feels like they are both dragging out for dragging it outs sake. They have both said the same thing several times in different ways.

Time to make like Elsa and let it go.

But I’d be shocked if he pulled what LeBron has done.
I am not implying that you believe this could happen, but this part of your post caught my attention, because I see people mention it all the time. I don't understand the people who have the "lebron fear" when it comes to Baker. Not only is it not a Baker thing, it really isn't a NFL thing. I can't think of any legitimate players in the NFL pulling what Lebron (amongst other NBA stars) has done. No team has ever let their star franchise QB leave them.

Washington Redskins sorta did. “Star” QB as in Cousins. Still better than half
The league.

I see what you’re saying.

But what I’m doing is drawing a comparison between the personalities between two stars. A good way to do that is to describe their motivations. A good way to do that is to look at LeBron’s actions.

LeBron is hugely motivated by building his ego and by being “the best” individual player. Where he is doing that doesn’t matter and whether he is liked isn’t as important as how good he is and what statistics he’s putting up and how much he’s admired.

I believe Baker is a team first guy. I think he wants to be loved, desires to lead and is great at identifying strengths. I think as long as he’s loved in Cleveland and has a team that’s built around him, he’s going to thrive.
