Baker Mayfield: Fire The Cannons

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I think Baker Mayfield is a genius. I mean that literally.

I think his emotional intelligence is super high and anyone who can call him a friend, teammate or mentor throughout his career is a lucky person.

It’ll be fun to watch him thrive. Everything he does is very calculated and mature. Dude has a superpower. He probably couldn’t even tell you why he does the things he does as a leader and on the field, but these things he does on social media are very important too. I didn’t see it until recently.

Notice how he picks and chooses his battles. There’s a pattern developing. He’s largely defending his teammates and as @The Human Q-Tip mentioned... he’s using it to rally the troops and at the same time push the conversation against the critics and in favor of the players. We want him to continue doing it.

He’ll be a leader when he’s done with football and a very, very good one. He wouldnt be a politician, he’d be the GM of a football team or some kind of charitable business(es). Just Hope it’s in Cleveland forever. But I’d be shocked if he pulled what LeBron has done. Way different mindset.

Your analysis is spot on.

And it is interesting how he arrived to his present state. Where did someone so young learn to lead?

My guess is that having faced such adversity, the being looked over for scholarships, having to walk on, having to fight and fight to start, that the first step of leading others is coming to grips with who he is first.

He learned what he was made out of, how far he could push himself, how he was able to process all that mentally and taking that awareness he learned how to motivate others by setting an example and by understanding where other people come from.

He undoubtedly drew from the slights and being overlooked the understanding of what not do (which is a powerful learning tool as well) and knowing what it would have meant to have others help him through things. So he offers others the praise and helping hand he never got.

So he applied all that; the good, the bad. It is a mixture of self-assuredness, grit, selflessness and empathy.

Above all else though is a self-awareness that few have.

I know the comparison is annoying, but the most Drew Brees things he does is his leadership. Yes they are both 6 foot around really accurate qb's with sneaky strong arms, but its their leadership and the way players react to playing with/for them that really makes a difference. They both just have the ability to get teammates to want to run threw a wall for them.

My early hot take prediction for next year. One lineman gets thrown out of a game for protecting Baker on the sideline and starting a fight. I wont predict who, but someone on defense will take a questionable late extra shot and it will set off a lineman that they get thrown out.

Baker reminds me of Philip Rivers from a personality/leadership standpoint. Brash. Unapologetically comfortable with who he is. Kind of a prick.

If you're on his team or a fan of his team, you absolutely adore him and would run through a brick wall for him.

If you aren't on his team or are a fan of his team, his personality cuts the other way and he's easy to really dislike.

I get the impression that everyone loves Baker.

Don't agree, Baker is very likeable to non Browns fans too. There is a buzz around Baker because of his personality that comes nowhere close to any buzz around Rivers....and Rivers should be a first ballot HOF when he retires.

It's not really worth arguing about.

I love Baker as much as anybody. I was stanning for him on RCF as early as anyone in the draft process. I'll simply say that his personality absolutely cuts both ways for a lot of people and leave it at that.

Yep. Either you absolutely love him or absolutely hate him. No in between.

I don’t think he had to learn it. It seems to me with Baker it’s all natural ability and instinct. Something he does without having to think about.

Living in Phoenix I have a ton of friends into sports but they follow other teams, they all love Baker, just think he is a leader. Its actually weird how many really like him, even my friend who coaches college football and is from KC and a HUUUUGE Chiefs fan loves Baker, he also loves Mahomes, but Baker he thinks is 2nd to him over any other QB not about to retire. (Brees and Brady.)

Then I have a friend who is a High School football coach, former all conference college rb, he is a huuuuge Cowboys fan, and loves Baker. He is the grumpiest guy I know and likes no one...but he loves himself some Baker.

I mean others that don't live in NE Ohio, how do people you talk to that are huge sports fans talk about Baker, I mean almost across the board they seem to really like him.

Yeah, Baker seems pretty widely loved in the NFL right now. That's until he starts shitting on peoples' teams instead of media D_bags like Cowherd and Grossi that everyone already hates. Then you'll start to see people not like his shenanigans. I personally love it.
