Game Thread | Game #41 | Cavs @ Suns | Jan. 8, 2023

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Cavs win by 14 with a monster 4th quarter. Neto runs them out of the building. JYD for Neto.

We end up with 37% from 3. Not bad. They were 53.8%

But we were 57.7% fg versus their 44%. So we killed them from 2, as we should.

Also outrebounded them and out assisted them and fewer turnovers.

My entire point is that there needed to be a consistent role for him before Rubio came back. That’s how you ease a transition - Rubio slots into the same role. When all are healthy, Neto won’t be in the rotation.

Neto could have been helping this team win more games and have a true backup point guard. When Rubio comes back, there will likely be some awkward adjustments to “figure out”. JB will fuck up some rotations and lineups and we’ll shake our heads and say “he hasn’t had Rubio all year”.

Signing Neto was supposed to alleviate that. Hell, Koby said as much when they brought him in. That’s what culture does. That’s what organizational leadership does. It’s more than “play hard” and screaming at officials for 2 hours.

I think Stevens’ part in the run tonight was coincidental but I can watch again. Didn’t really make any plays besides the alley-ooo. Got dunked on almost immediately after checking in.
Neto’s role is to be ready when needed. He’s not going to get consistent minutes. He played well tonight against a depleted team, and was fresh when they weren’t. That does not mean inserting Neto on a regular basis will produce similar results.

Most NBA coaches do not have two lead guards as capable as orchestrating an offense from a ball dominant role as Garland and Mitchell. And Neto was signed BEFORE Koby secured Rubios return and BEFORE the Mitchell trade happened

Give the majority of NBA coaches our starting backcourt and they too would have given Neto a role similar to the one he’s had to date.

Now when you add Rubio to that mix(bigger, longer, offensively better, better offense runner then Neto) to the mix and there just isn’t a consistent role in an every game rotational basis for Neto. A sweet deep bench insurance policy to have so credit to Koby.

What did Neto do that was so great?

Didn’t see the game. The box says he had 2 assists, a board, and a 3-pointer, in 11 minutes.

On this team in the season it’s had, well just have to agree to disagree.

The Cavs are not deep and have struggled to find consistent contributors outside of their core 4 all year. LeVert can be included as well.

Neto has consistently impacted winning and should have earned a greater role or at least a more consistent one. There was a role available to him and JB stubbornly stayed away from, and that’s an indictment on him as a coach. They have lost games because they lacked the things Neto provides, and they probably would have lost this one too.

Donovan Mitchell is among the league leaders in minutes per game and he’s not a great point guard, particularly in lineups where nobody else is a capable ball handler. Minutes for Neto have been available all season long as we’ve watched Stevens, Okoro, and Osman all take turns floundering trying to impersonate a guard on offense.
