Round 5 - Pick 140 - Dorian Thompson-Robinson, QB, UCLA

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
His games have been against the two best defenses in the league.

I want to see what he does against one of the worst ones after the boost from that very legitimate GW drive.

This has worked out pretty good for the Browns.

People need to be patient with DTR. Thought he played the game that Stefanski wanted from him, avoid the disaster throw and make a few plays.

He made throws in big situations. If Njoku didn't play like shit, he's probably got a bit of some prettier stats. And given what we will see next week, I expect to see Kevin give him a bit more of some shot plays.

All in all, it was a rookie who beat Pittsburgh. What more can I ask for?
I’d be more willing to be patient if people stopped trying to talk this up like it was a good or even decent game from him

That’s the disconnect for me. Him “beating Pittsburgh” had a whole hell of a lot more to do with having a once in a decade defense. I mean by the exact same logic Walker beat San Fran, what more could we ask?

Would you have preferred we lost?

The stats on the Steelers are ugly, but they were a turnover machine this year. Like I said, Stefanski just wanted to minimize risks and win the game while they get to another week of practice.

I do think there is something to catching a ball from a new passer, and trying to do that in one week is very tough. I don't think DTR made any big mistakes or was bad at all. He was...average to below average. He did what the gameplan asked him to do and what the team asked him to do.

He also came through in the clutch, which is exactly what the Browns needed. They didn't need style points, they needed the win. Give it a few weeks, I feel confident in DTR being a pretty decent QB by that time. He looked good enough to me today.

Better than that Mullet'd Carney Handed Bitch on the other side.

Yep.

He was below average…against an elite defense. Second one he’s been stuck facing.

Broncos will be a good indicator for me. If he has a solid game there, we’ll all be singing his praises.

There were at least 5 legit drops and probably another 2-3 balls that you'd really like to see a pass catcher go above and beyond the norm and make a play for his QB.

Now in fairness, most of the drops were short routes that were going to gain minimal yardage, but, DTR's 24-43 probably should have been more like 30-43 for like 180 or something like that.

Still not good, but a bit better.

In what world is 30-43 not good. Sure, not a lot of yards but he was just executing the game plan.

There really isn't a lot you can glean from 42/43 passes being within 10 yards in support of the guy. I didn't see someone finding guys open consistently.

Almost all drops would have been negative yards. You can't call this a good day. 3.6 ypa is terrible

I think going from 4 TOs to a game winning drive with only one TO is a pretty large improvement. I don't see how you can't call that a good day for a rookie QBs second game

Its incredibly tough to throw an interception on a 5 yard pass. Not impressive. It's 90% of his throws that were basically uninterceptible

Were you impressed by how easily our offense moved the ball? Especially when we werent in Steelers territory starting with the ball?

You open that gameplan up and continue to see not finding open players and picks. There's a reason we didn't trust him to throw down field

I think it was level setting and managing his experience as a rookie QB. We saw in DTR's first start, if you give him a long leash, he ended up digging his own grave. Now, Stefanski can set expectations and start adding in down field attacks with DTR. DTR can now be shown why it's important to be smart with the ball, while also working in more attacking throws.

Today wasn't about style or operating the perfect offense. Today was about survival with a rookie QB. I was crying out for more attacking throws in the 3rd Q just like everyone else. But the Browns were clearly trying to manage the game rather than getting risky and trying to seal the game.

tl;dr give him more time before claiming he's totally awful. He managed the game today, which is a step above PJ Walker. Now let's see if he can do more.

so open up the playbook and revert to g1. Cool.

1.5q of passes that didn't make it past the line of scrimmage today. The offense is either 1. Fucked or 2. Fucked with him, depending on what strategy you wanna roll with.

I think we’ll see Stefanski open the playbook up for him more in the Broncos game.

He’ll have more time to throw. Nowhere near the pass rush the Steelers do.

He’ll have time to throw beyond the sticks a few more times, and to check on more slow developing explosive plays. I do wonder if Stefanski is gunshy about running DTR though.
