The Strus is Loose

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
It's a very good FA signing, and we haven't had many.
One thing I can say for Mitchell is that he is a hell of a lot better at recruiting help than Lebron was, at least before we started Pokemon-ing (Gotta catch em' all!) washed-up ring chasing vets on his second go around. Round one of LeBron might have gone a lot differently if we were getting this tier of guys (Trevor Ariza, for example). The Hughes summer was brutal. So many great options, so much cap space, but somehow we end up with Hughes and fat Donny.

All of this is to say I love Strus and its exciting to see this kind of addition made in the FA market (Yes, technically a trade, but only because he agreed to it as a free agent). You rarely see that in Cleveland.

OH MY GOD.

Before LeBron came back, Ariza was the #1 guy I wanted for the Cavs that offseason. I wanted the Cavs to DRAFT him that Luke Jackson year.

I am forever thankful for the San Antonio Spurs for making this trade possible.

Strus is the second player I'm glad I was wrong about. Thought this was an overpay and that he was a rich man's Jason Kapono. Wrong. Worth every penny. He is truly a consistent glue guy putting up a quiet near 15-5-5 on most nights.

My first one was Mitchell. I was one of those that believed he was a marginally upgraded Sexton. Wrong. Also worth every penny.

Strus is currently shooting around 39% from the field. This is…without checking…probably top 5 least efficient in the league for a starter.

For the record, I love Strus & what he brings as a leader on this team. He seems like a professional.

However, his inefficiency is troubling. I’m pretty sure it can be attributed to him being asked to play beyond his role.

Frankly, there’s hardly anyone on the team that has met or surpassed expectations besides CPJ, Merril, & a marginal improvement for Okoro.

Here’s a list of guys who have regressed…

1. DG—not the shooter he used to be. Turnover machine.

2. Donovan is worse than last year. Or last year was an anomaly & he merely regressed to the mean.

3. Mobley- he has not made a Year 3 Jump. Barnes, Wagner, Senguin, Cade from his class are all looking better.

4. Fro- While he has been extremely impressive the past few games…overall, I don’t think he is the same player he was during his all star year.

5. Niang- pretty sizeable regression.

6. LeVert- I would actually say he is playing on par with expectations. He gets a pass as well. But he is still plagued with the same issues as he always was-ball stoppage & inefficiency.

When this many people are struggling simultaneously- you gotta point to the coach. Good thing is…when we most likely get a beat down in the 1st round- JBB will be history.

After 18 games:

Wide Open 3s: 0.9 3PM at 48.6%
Open 3: 1.3 3PM at 40.4%
Tightly Guarded 3s: 0.7 3PM at 29.3%

Last 7 games Strus has made 3.1 3PM at 44%
5 of 7 attempts per game are open or wide open 3s. He’s made 52 percent of open and wide open 3s.

It shows that we are getting him more open now which is good. I think we can do more as the players become more familiar with each other.
Month of December was a shooting slump.
Shot 29% at almost 10 3PA per game.

Wide Open 3s: 0.9 3PM at 37.5%
Open 3s: 1.5 3PM at 33.3%
Tightly Guarded 3s: 0.9 3PM at 14.7%

He’s just shooting more shots but hasn’t been able to make many.

I think the bigger issue with Strus' shooting is that he's not playing with many guys that have the gravity to pull defenses away from him. Don, DG and Evan have all missed substantial time. That takes both playmaking and gravity away from him. And, yes, he's asked to do much more (playmaking for himself and others) because of it. He's not getting as many of his shots, and being asked to do more. I do think an "offensive coordinator" could do wonders for this team, but also think you'll see him shooting better when the team is at full strength.

Here's a high percentage shot by Strus, from 1/5/2024, against the Wizards. Hat tip to Donovan Mitchell for the pass.

Why is he shooting below his career average on 3? He's shooting below league average as well.

One thing to keep in mind is that among players who have started 40 games this season, he's bottom 10 in both 3PT openness and 3PT shot quality, (via BBall-Index.)
