Z not retiring next season?

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Z's great for a backup. He rarely makes mistakes, he knows where to be. And you don't feel uncomfortable if you have to give him big minutes once in a while. Z will always shoot the ball and rebound well. The only other good rebounder on this team is Andy. Z may be slow, but he can do good things on defense. He knows how to use his length to block shots under the hoop. Z could be more than fine as a backup center for the next few years.

Isn't this a good thing? Who the hell else is going to play C for us?

one, you cant teach 7'3"

Two, z wouldnt come back making huge minutes, nor would he cost us any assets. Its called resiging. The question is, is Z more valuable than someone like Jawad. Obviously yes, so you resign him and let him take a roster spot. To be honest, I wouldnt trade for Z at this point for what he brings on the court, but neither is any of the teams interested, they want him to buy him out.

Lee.....it's actually re-sign.

Let's not make this into a Z is the best thing since sliced bread thread.

I'd take him back. We're going to need depth at the 5, he'll be cheep, and he knows the system.

We're still going to need a 5 because I can't imagine Shaq will be here as well unless he wants to sign for a small contract as well.

I've been eating sliced bread since 1976, and it's pathetic!

He is very good at his current role, back up center. He should have atleast 2 more years in him as a backup center. Not making him into anything more, but he is of value to this team. Also, if he can bring us some young tall tallent, i would be thrilled.

Well, Shaq says he wants to play 2 more seasons after this, so I guess anything is possible. My gut tells me that Z would sign for the vet minimum, whatever that may be, and that can only help us.

Also, if someone like Sasha Kaun continues to impress, or we get a draft pick or a young 5 through trade, it would be good to have Z and/or Shaq as a mentor for them.

Not to mention the fact that Andy and Z are best friends and play very well together.

As long as there's gas left in the tank, I see it as win-win.

I hope Shaq comes back for considerably less (I am 98% positive he will) and Z comes back...both bring 2 different styles that seem to work well together in this young season.

You have to wonder though, if LeBron goes elsewhere would Z still want to return?

Z's loyalty is to Cleveland and the Cavaliers organization, not LeBron James.

Z is just being greedy! After the ring we will get this year he wants to come back and get another one. ;)

True; but would Z state that he wants to come back so emphatically "now" if LeBron was not coming back? I'm not so sure.

Shaq also stated he wants to sign a two or three year deal "with the Cavs". Would any of these guys say this if LeBron was not coming back? I'm not so sure.

LeBron will be back. I've said it multiple times now and the more time goes by, I've heard nothing to the contrary.

Assuming Z gets traded this year... and assuming Z wants more then the vet minimum to come back the Cavs would have to use the MLE to sign him.

Do we really want to use next years MLE on Z for one year? When that money could be used for a long term piece in next years deep free agent class?

I'm not sure about this. Z seems like a guy who would put his ego aside(but we'll see if that's the case in the off-season), but Shaq....I'm a little afraid he'd want a big contract.

To be fair, he's taken his lesser on-court role really well....but I still have doubts about what contract he'll demand.

No they wouldn't, they still have the bi-annual exception.

Even so, ~half of the MLE would be fine. We'd regain the full MLE in the next season, and we'd still have the rest of the MLE to sign a lesser FA.

edit: next year's FA class isn't even that deep with regards to long term pieces...
