18 year NBA vet Mutombo calls it quits

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'll always remember his embrace of the ball after Denver took down the #1 seed Seattle in the first round all those years ago. Great person, tremendous player.

A great player and a great man.

He truly put his money where his mouth was.

I'll never forget the stories of him going into opposing locker rooms and challenging people to give money for medical instruments for the hospitals he built in Africa. If memory serves he got D-Wade for an X-Ray machine one time.

The world would be a much better place if we all lived a little more like that.

one of the most memorable moments of nba history for me

but 18 years in the league! wow.

Going to be strange watching the NBA without Mutombo around, a sad lost for basketball and a shame it ended this way.

I'll miss him, but I won't miss his elbows and my fear of Bron running into them again.

Great player, even better humanitarian.

Great person but I echo the elbow sentiment. The league is now a much safer place.

Anyone think he'll continue on with the NBA in another way?

This is a a god damn travesty.

I actually met him back when I was in middle school. I went with my family to a brunch with the Hawks and their cheerleaders and got his signature.

GREAT human being, I really hate to see him go out like this.

Oden just couldn't stand not being the oldest looking player in the league.....:chuckles:

Is there any video of this? My buddy said it wasn't that bad when it happened, that he just turned it.

I remember the Barkley career- ending injury, he was telling people like 20 seconds after "It's over...it's over" or something like that.

At least Mutombo had a nice, long career when this happened, so there shouldn't be too many regrets on the issue.

BUT:

1) He didn't get a well-earned championship out of it... why did he have to play for the Rockets at the end of it all? Everyone knows there's a 0% of it happening there... And he's a true winner too, the proof being traded to the Philly Sixers in 2001 and the Nets soon after.

2) I wanted to see another player come close to the All-Time Games Played records that Kareem and Robert Parish have a stranglehold on for the last 12+ years. Now that the player with the longest active career has retired, we can only hope that Shaq or Kidd can get close in 3-5 years ... Yeah, like that'll ever happen...

But nonetheless, I like watching Games Played and Seasons Played records play out for some reason (hey Kevin Willis, just come out of retirement, play one game, and become the all-time leader in Season Played, will ya?).

3) Why did his career have to end in such a depressing way? Bejesus...
