2010 Indians Game Discussion

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Fausto really stinking it up tonigt. Even before this game, he had a 4.76 ERA after the All-Star Break. Looks like he is either running out of gas or the Tribe really blew it in not dealing him while they had the chance.

This question was posed over on the Indians Ink board, but I wanted to pose it here as well for you guys out there.

Who is the Indians 2nd baseman of the future? Who is the Indians 2nd baseman for opening day 2011?

Opening Day: Jason Donald/Jayson Nix

I don't see the Indians signing a retread- they didn't for 2010, despite Valbuena's averageness, and they won't for 2011. Too many options already on the 40-man roster. One will be the starter, the other the utility infielder. Take your pick.

Future 2B: Cord Phelps

Tough call on who ends up here going forward between him and Kipnis but I give Phelps the nod as of right now. Cord is the much more polished defender and a possible plus at the position- a must for the Tribe infield with the organizational emphasis on pitching to contact. What also makes this move a little easier is that Kipnis has far exceeded expectations with his bat and could be moved back to the OF. Indians could also consider moving Phelps to 3B and keep Kipnis at 2B, too. Either way, I think the team is looking at having a high-OBP 2B with pop.

Never call a 2nd round pick a "phenom" again.

I wouldn't label him as a 'phenom' or future star until I see him in pro ball either, but his draft position is kind of a moot point. The following players were not 1st rounders, either:

Albert Pujols (13th) MVP
Ryan Howard (5th) MVP
Dustin Pedroia (2nd) MVP
Justin Morneau (3rd) MVP
Dan Uggla (11th)
Joey Votto (2nd)
Kevin Youkilis (8th)
Grady Sizemore (3rd)
Cliff Lee (4th) Cy Young
Brandon Phillips (2nd)

I stopped because I got bored, these were just ones I remembered off the top of my head. You can go find several other guys who weren't first rounders who have become Cy Youngs and MVPs. Yes, many MLB stars come from the first round but defiinitely not all- this isn't the NBA where if you aren't a top 5, you are destined to be a side kick.

Because of the structure of the draft, with players having up to 4 years of draft eligibility, many guys slide due to signability concerns- which Washington was one. There are attitude concerns with him, but the talent is definitely there for him to make some noise.

Who the hell knocks a 2nd round draft pick in a 50 round draft? This isn't the NBA.

He was a first round pick last year...

Not going to call him a phenom, as there are some things with the swing I'm not a fan of and will need to be fixed.

Still, great pick.

Matt LaPorta struck out tonight in the 9th by bunting foul with two strikes.

Honestly, WTF is he doing bunting with 2 strikes? Was this his idea, or the 3B coach? Really? If he is struggling that bad, why wasn't he pinch-hit for by Hafner? Wow is all I got to say.

I am definitely not knocking the guy by saying don't call him a "phenom".

IMO, the word phenom should be reserved for guys who are/were clear cut number one picks like LeBron, Bryce Harper, and Strasburg just to name a few.

Nowhere did I say this kid can't be good or that if you aren't a top pick in the MLB then you have no future. I know nothing about him to be honest. The only thing I really do know is he is definitely not a phenom.

The Indians have until tomorrow(August 20th) to select a PTBNL from the Yankees to complete the Austin Kearns trade.

Is the alternative to take cash or do they need to select someone? Frankly, I doubt the Yanks are giving up a decent prospect for Kearns.

By the way, did anyone find the way Brantley got injured to be bizarre? I've never seen anyone turn an ankle just getting out of the box before at any level. I'm going to be the guy to say this. He needed to get off of his butt and hobble down the line as well.

I guess this is his third time turning his left angle. He's had the same angle problems forever. NOT good. He's obviously got weak angles.

Anyone hear who the Indians selected from the Yankees for Kearns?

Michael Brantley getting MRI on L ankle in Cle. If he goes on DL, Tribe probably has someone stashed in Det. to replace him.

I want to see someone new come up. Maybe Phelps? It probably will be Jordan though.

We get to see Nix attempting to play third and Valbuena attempting to play second tonight. Joy.

Indians Acquire Zach McAllister To Complete Trade
By Zach Links [August 20, 2010 at 6:19pm CST]

The Indians have acquired pitcher Zach McAllister from the Yankees to complete the Austin Kearns deal, according to a team press release. The trade called for Cleveland to receive a player to be named later or cash.

McAllister, a native Midwesterner, has a 5.09 ERA with 6.0 K/9 and 2.6 BB/9 for the Yankees Triple-A affiliate this season. He enjoyed a strong 2009 in Double-A Trenton, however, posting a 2.23 ERA with 7.1 K/9 and 2.5 BB/9.

Baseball America ranked the 6'5 righthander as the fifth-best prospect in the organization and the second-best pitcher behind Arodys Vizcaino. According to their 2010 Prospect Handbook, he had the best control of any pitcher in the Yankees system but his slider is his only plus pitch.

McAllister is 22 years old. Was the Yankees "Minor League Pitcher of the Year" last season.

Reading some scouting reports here. McAllister appears to be primarily a sinker-slider pitcher who typically pitches to contact. Not a real overpowering guy, his sinker sits 88-91. He does have excellent control, with almost no walks throughout his career. Obviously one of the drawbacks to pitching to contact is a lot of hits allowed.

One of the more interesting/concerning things about McAllister is that before this season he had been extremely good at not allowing home runs. Not sure what happened this year, if it was the step up in competition or what, but he's allowed 20 home runs this year after allowing just 17 home runs over the last FOUR seasons.

At his best he projects to a 4th or 5th starter and that's if he can get back to not allowing such a high number of home runs.

Still not a bad haul for 300 at bats (and roughly 500k paid) of Austin Kearns.
