Never call a 2nd round pick a "phenom" again.
This question was posed over on the Indians Ink board, but I wanted to pose it here as well for you guys out there.
Who is the Indians 2nd baseman of the future? Who is the Indians 2nd baseman for opening day 2011?
Never call a 2nd round pick a "phenom" again.
I wouldn't label him as a 'phenom' or future star until I see him in pro ball either, but his draft position is kind of a moot point. The following players were not 1st rounders, either:
Albert Pujols (13th) MVP
Ryan Howard (5th) MVP
Dustin Pedroia (2nd) MVP
Justin Morneau (3rd) MVP
Dan Uggla (11th)
Joey Votto (2nd)
Kevin Youkilis (8th)
Grady Sizemore (3rd)
Cliff Lee (4th) Cy Young
Brandon Phillips (2nd)
I stopped because I got bored, these were just ones I remembered off the top of my head. You can go find several other guys who weren't first rounders who have become Cy Youngs and MVPs. Yes, many MLB stars come from the first round but defiinitely not all- this isn't the NBA where if you aren't a top 5, you are destined to be a side kick.
Because of the structure of the draft, with players having up to 4 years of draft eligibility, many guys slide due to signability concerns- which Washington was one. There are attitude concerns with him, but the talent is definitely there for him to make some noise.
Who the hell knocks a 2nd round draft pick in a 50 round draft? This isn't the NBA.
The Indians have until tomorrow(August 20th) to select a PTBNL from the Yankees to complete the Austin Kearns trade.
Is the alternative to take cash or do they need to select someone? Frankly, I doubt the Yanks are giving up a decent prospect for Kearns.
By the way, did anyone find the way Brantley got injured to be bizarre? I've never seen anyone turn an ankle just getting out of the box before at any level. I'm going to be the guy to say this. He needed to get off of his butt and hobble down the line as well.
Michael Brantley getting MRI on L ankle in Cle. If he goes on DL, Tribe probably has someone stashed in Det. to replace him.

Indians Acquire Zach McAllister To Complete Trade
By Zach Links [August 20, 2010 at 6:19pm CST]
The Indians have acquired pitcher Zach McAllister from the Yankees to complete the Austin Kearns deal, according to a team press release. The trade called for Cleveland to receive a player to be named later or cash.
McAllister, a native Midwesterner, has a 5.09 ERA with 6.0 K/9 and 2.6 BB/9 for the Yankees Triple-A affiliate this season. He enjoyed a strong 2009 in Double-A Trenton, however, posting a 2.23 ERA with 7.1 K/9 and 2.5 BB/9.
Baseball America ranked the 6'5 righthander as the fifth-best prospect in the organization and the second-best pitcher behind Arodys Vizcaino. According to their 2010 Prospect Handbook, he had the best control of any pitcher in the Yankees system but his slider is his only plus pitch.
