I buy this.

fuck dan snyder.

This is why we need to draft a QB at 1 I think. cuz assholes like this will fuck us over if we do it any other way.
I mean, it sounds like Washington sweetened the deal. They need Smith for multiple years. We needed him for one.

It’ll be interesting to see what the compensation is but my guess is they threw a lot of weight behind this to land him as their starter for the next 2-4 years.

Would not have been wise of us to invest heavily in a short-term solution.

So why isn't Dorsey getting creamed in here for missing out on Smith?

I mean Washington did slightly overpay for Smith as well so they could get him and there are other good options on the table. Dorsey knows better than anyone else the value of Smith, but at the same time Smith probably didn't want a short term deal so Dorsey couldn't offer as much if he wasn't going to sign long term.

For what Washington gave up to get him, and for what they’re paying him, I’m glad we didn’t go close to that price for a bridge starter.

I’m so sick of the Mary Kay “Browns tried and failed” articles. Go suck a fat one.

They inquired, probably offered, and Washington paid more than any sane GM was willing to give up for a 34 year old quarterback.

They then proceeded to make him one of the highest paid QB’s in the NFL despite refusing to pay their own Pro Bowler who is 5 years younger.

If a franchise wants to implode, you let them. I’m glad Dorsey didn’t jump off the bridge with them.

Precisely.

Let's not be idiots and gut Dorsey for missing out on one option at bridge QB, an option that would have required an overpay. Leave that kind of asinine take to the Mary Kays and Tony Grossis of the world.

He wouldn't have extended here and that was the hold-up. That's my speculation, but it totally makes sense.

Well, given that Dorsey traded up and drafted Mahomes last year despite having a 33 year-old Smith, I’m not sure if we wanted to extend Alex or not. Dorsey thought the time was right to develop someone to be the franchise a year ago—the same would hold true now that he would’ve been in position to do it again.

Thus, I think Dorsey would’ve drafted a QB at #1 regardless. Smith didn’t change that. I don’t think his willingness to sign on long-term was ever our initiative anyway.

Thus, giving higher than a 4th or so for a guy you only plan to start for a year—at most two—I think Washington priced us out of it pretty quickly. They gave up a lot, and then paid him a lot. Clearly they had different intentions for him than we did.

I don't disagree. From Smith's prospective though, a year wasted in Cleveland does nothing. From our perspective, Dorsey didn't want him in KC, why would he want to extend him now? From Washington's perspective, they decided to move on from Cousins (or Cousins decided he wasn't going to sign there long-term). Washington paid quite a bit, but they were looking goodlast year before a TON of injuries including to what's-his-name DT from Alabama who looked really good (game 3 or 5?), and their offensive line.

We don't know who else was bidding for Smith, but initially it looks like Washington gave up a bit too much. This is a team in the same division as the Eagles and the Zeke-drama-free Cowboys. However, they are getting a good QB and for a long time. The pundits will talk but it feels a bit like everyone won.

I'll blame him for doing a hatchet job acquiring Jamie Collins, which cost us Jimmy G to start this mess.

I know, right?

Like why are we even still talking about this guy??
