2017 MLB Draft

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Team going really young w their HSers after the success of Lindor (also a 17 year old when picked). Not a bad idea.

Kinda bizarre that they haven't taken any pitchers yet.

Think it's just a nod to how many guys have stepped up on the farm/the depth there currently.

Have Clevinger, Merritt, Morimando, and Plutko who have pitched big league innings in AAA, with Merryweather just now reaching that level. Pannone, Lugo, and Esparza in AA. McKenzie, Civale, Bieber, Chiang in High-A...SP is pretty deep right now, not including injured guys like Anderson and Kaminsky who are in the upper levels.

They need more reliever help from this draft though.

Gotta love playing in the worst (perhaps tied with NL Central) division in baseball

I don't give a shit.

Just like last year, get me into a series in October...all you need at the end of 162 games is to be in a DS. Who cares about how bad your division is/was at that point.

I haven't been able to watch the draft, have we picked up any pitchers that could be relievers or have we just stuck with position players?

Just took their first pitcher with their 7th pick. Announced him as a starter. Small lefty from Southern Miss. 103 Ks in 99 IP.

Nice, you expect him to be a reliever for us? I know lefty relievers can be guys who jump quickly in an organization especially one like the Indians who are a bit short on them.

They announced him as a starter, so he'll start initially.

Similar in stature, profile, and stuff to Tanner Tully from last years draft.

Any of the current starters we have you may see converted over to reliever? We both feel we lack some depth in our minor league bullpens so I am trying to see who else we have that could end up being in ours going forward especially for the 2019 season.

I don't think they are lacking that much bullpen depth right now where they are taking guys away from starting...not yet...

Jeff Johnson, Josh Martin, Kyle Crockett, Shawn Armstrong, and Joe Colon in AAA

Cam Hill, Leo Linares, Perci Garner, David Speer, Dylan Baker in AA

Argenis Angulo, Billy Strode in High A

Ryder Ryan, Dalbert Siri, Ben Krauth, Mike Letkewicz in A

There's depth there, with multiple guys who have MLB stuff at every level...just not a lot of quality from the left side IMO.

3rd straight pitcher, and 1st one with room for projection based on body size.

James Karinchak from Bryant. RHP. 272 K in 229 IP. All 3 of the pitchers drafted have plus off speed pitches, high K rates, but Karinchak is the first who has MLB level velocity.

Reading he had some health problems. May transition into the pen if that's the case.

Gotcha! Who do you think of the group at AA and lower has the most upside? I am not as familiar with all the lower arms.

I think our next in house closer, if Cody Allen walks, is one of Linares, Angulo, or Ryan. I'm a big fan or Angulo. Guys numbers once he got out of rookie ball are absurd. 1.53 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, 10 K/9 over 70 IP his last 2 seasons. Big bodied guy, consistent in the mid 90s, touching 97-98 at times this year, but throws a slutter looking pitch like Kluber which he has 2 variations of and mixes in a change at times. Think he moves up to AA once the All Star game circuit is finished.

Linares has been a different guy since he went to the bullpen. Blew up his last outing, gave up 8 ER which is half of the ER he's given up since he moved to the bullpen, but is generating a ton of swings and misses and not many baserunners as a reliever. Guy has always had stuff, now it plays up out of the bullpen.

Ryan is the wildcard though. Good chance he's touching 100 and consistently sitting 97/98 in the next year or 2. He's so raw since he was a 2 way player at UNC, but in his 1st year full time as a pitcher, he's dominating, which is a testament to his stuff...once he learns the intricacies of pitching, which only comes with reps, who knows how good he can be.

Also, keep an eye on Dalbert Siri. Guy Ks everything he sees in the lower levels pretty much, but he also doesn't know where his stuff is going quite often. Still some projection left on him too.

How are the Indians looking today in the draft @BimboColesHair? I have no clue about any of the guys we are drafting lol

Started the day with 2 signable HS pitchers who both appear to be headed to Juco's, so I think we sign both when all is said and done...both have projection bodies. 6'4, 6'5 guys who are lean.

Took a Juco catcher who put up pretty absurd numbers.

Grabbed 4 college pitchers, 2 I think will be relievers...one is interesting because he was a 2 way player, so has some projection left.

But the most interesting pick they made was the HS SS they grabbed in round 14. Big frame, strong arm, fast, good bat speed, but lacks consistency at the plate. Could pitch if he fizzles out as a position player (touching 93 as a pitcher). But signed with Georgia Tech, so might be a tough sign with the limited pool money.

In typical Indians fashion, they are grabbing a ton of guys off of BA's Top 500 list...
