Erik Spoelstra names JUSTISE WINSLOW as starting point guard in the absence of Dragic.
I must not have been paying attention to the Heat enough. If the coach makes this call, Justise gotta be pretty good in this role.
Makes me wonder if the new "thing" is going to be playmaking forwards/bigs -- a paradigm occupied by Giannis and LeBron at the top tier (LeBron in the GOAT tier), Donkeylips in the "playing on a great team" tier, Luka showing much promise in, and even Nance doing a little bit on the Cavs. Seems like way more guys are doing this now than I can remember.
I did some reading about this in the offseason (was fantasizing about trades and roster construction).
Winslow actually likes to play point guard and last year acted as the guy getting the ball up the court and initiating the offense for a decent few stretch of games.
The results were evidently pretty good if Spo is going back to it again. I think the true point forwards that have elite court vision and passing, (LeBron and Giannis as you say, and on lesser tiers unique guys like Turner or Batum) have been the ones paving the movement, and then you have unicorns like Simmons and Doncic who are straight up point guards.
But distinction should be made in that all those guys above are good at setting up offenses. Guys like Oladipo, Dion and Cedi (for now) are good penetrators and distributors but i think lack that 'floor general' awareness.
Winslow i think is making the transition from simple penetrate-distribute to someone who can strategically set up an offense and the hope is our guys, Sexton and Cedi (maybe Nance) can also develop similalry. Winslow is also unique coz he can be a full time PG too as he doesnt need to be hidden on wings on defense. Most guys above cant keep up with the quick guards and so the team needs to buy into positionless basketball or switching positions on offense/defense. Not with Winslow, he is probably the best guard defender in the league and stilll strong enough to handle the wings too. Super unique player and has become a favorite of mine as he's also just a straight up dog with plenty of hustle and attitude.
Anyway, i agree with your point, the game is moving towards this positionless basketball more and more, and the transition is more apparent now than ever. The Stepien had an awesome article on these guys in the previous draft (Troy Brown Jr, Okogie, Jacob Evans, Kenrich Williams) and in the next year or two when they develop and are given the chance to flourish, the change in the game will even be more rapid.
Highly suggest the Stepien artucle to everyone.
