2018 Cleveland Browns Off Season Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
People keep calling him a playmaker. He isn't a playmaker.

Honestly I'm kind of baffled myself. People who so readily embrace advanced stats on other sections of the board are just spamming the 1000 yard receiver button and belittling yards per catch. It's akin to saying look at how many total points or total hits this guy had and then laughing when someone brings up at bats or total shooting percentage

I just grabbed all of the players in the NFL with at least 25 receptions last year. I picked the number arbitrarily. I can expand it if anyone likes. There were 169 of those players last season.

I sorted them by yards per target. The median guy on this list had 7.22 yards per target.

On this list of 169 guys, Jarvis Landry ranks 131st in yards per target. Those are targets that could be going to other players that are being funneled to Landry to produce a very inefficient number.

The guys below Landry? Disproportionately running backs and tight ends.

There were actually 31 RBs who had a higher yards per target than Landry last year. Poop Dick himself had 7.45 yards per target on 93 targets.

His targets are inefficient. He can move the chains, but calling him a playmaker? I mean, he makes first down grabs. Not much more than that.
Not disputing your evidence, but a guy that grab it on 3rd down is something we have lacked for nearly 10 years. Much of that is on the QB, but if we can have that dynamic playmaker (Gordon) & the speed threat (Coleman), the guy running across the middle better be damn good. He fits that role here very well.

I want to point out to everyone who isn't a fan of this trade:

Think back and remember all of the times you were pissed that Browns receivers dropped passes. We just got ourselves the best slot receiver in the game for the next 5 years.

Agree with basically all of that.

I still don't think it's really a bad move, though. We have a ridiculous amount of cap space, so overpaying a decent player isn't a big deal long-term and we can more than afford it short term. If we had given up a second for him, I'd have hated it, but a couple of mid to late round picks? Whatever.

I posted it earlier. I don't think we'll make that trade though. I can't see us trading from #4 out of the top 10.
To #11 though?

I would hope we at least "listen" if they start off by offering 11, 42, and next year's 1st

Okay, I’d say that scheme plays a big role in that.

We can argue over the distinction of what constitutes a “playmaker,” but what Landry is is a reliable target at multiple levels which is something this team sorely lacks.

I’d agree that isn’t worthy of a #1 designation or money, but again that doesn’t matter.

Especially with the possibility of a young QB, he’s exactly the type safety net you’d look for.

As Landry's efficiently on targets becomes the target of scrutiny, how does one forget who threw the passes?

Jay Cutler, Matt Moore, and something called a David Fales. Even his name contained failure.

The year before, Landry caught 94 balls on 131 targets for a solid 72%. Tannehill was no Brady either, of course. Let's see how he produces with Gordon and my favorite emerging Brown in 2018: David Njoku.

Exactly. We’ve watched Britt and Louis drop everything in sight. Coleman let the last pass of the season go right though his hands. God forbid we add some talent.

The final piece of this is front loading any restructure with guaranteed money and allowing the possibility for flexibility in later years.

edit: removed a line about running backs above Landry because PFR has stupid positions for some guys that let some WRs sneak into my RB list

Last year he had Cutler, the years before he had a much higher yards a target, but your point is not with out merit, just ignores the Cutler factor.

He's not a gamebreaking guy but last year was seemingly more of an aberration.

He saw a steady climb in YPC in each of his first 3 seasons. Last season he saw a significant drop but also played with a QB that did not push the ball down the field at all. He's more of just a workhorse slot guy that makes a ton of sense with Gordon but way less without a true #1.

The Browns were fucking abysmal just making easy catches last year. Landry is a reliable guy who can move chains. He's a nice fit with a young QB.....someone who can be leaned on to go over the middle and provide easier release valve throws.

Given his age and roster fit, those are the guys you overpay a little IMO.

We have so much goddamn money no one will even take it from us. We likely go and burn piles of it at Edgewater. At least we got a dude who can catch the ball and picks up first downs.
