2019 Draft, Pick #30 - Kevin Porter Jr., USC

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I have no idea honestly. It actually confuses me. When the Bucks - Pistons announced the trade after the draft we should have just jumped in and made it a 3 team swap. Had KPJ announced with Garland and Windler.

The reporting on this has been really minimal. It seems like it is isn't likely to go through or something. I really don't get it. I guess the trade with the pistons must be done first, and then the flip can be confirmed?

On the other hand, Hunter has not shown up in Atlanta.

They already announced the Snell trade. Pistons have Snell and Porter's draft rights. It was announced immediately after the draft.

Hunter deal can't be announced until the AD trade is announced on July 6th. Our trade should be able to be announced we already have the picks and cash and Pistons already have KPJs rights.

It has been super quiet. I googled before I asked the question and could not find a single thing except for a small line saying they “plan on” having it done this week as opposed to July 6. No reasoning, no concrete dates, nothing

I'm extremely skeptical about KPJ. I just don't really see how a guy who lacked maturity/couldn't fit in with other younger people at college is going to have an easier time with the rigors and pressure of the NBA. Seems to me that would be even harder.

Then again, I'm just a message board schmuck who has never met him, so I could be completely wrong.

Right, but if you were not skeptical about the 30th overall pick, I'd have legit questions about your talent evaluation...

Everyone should be skeptical of KPJ. He fell for a reason.

Although I'm not skeptical about the 26th pick....

With respect to KPJ - and leaving his game and that awful FT% out of it - I think college is a much better venue for a young guy's maturation than the NBA. Having all that money, the much greater degree of freedom, the groupies, etc., that inevitably come with an NBA gig....Just kind of scary. "He's heading to the NBA because he wasn't good at handling college" doesn't sound like a great plan.

College ball is not good practice for the association with their junk defense

I'm hoping that he had a "come to god" moment. I have seen it with plenty of young people. My friend who I drank beer with in College turned out to be drunk every time I showed up already. He started missing classes and messing up his life. Within a year he was sober at 22. He totally has his shit together since then and is better off than some of the more "responsible" people at the time.

I heard it was pot that was his problem. That could be an ongoing thing, it could just be that he got caught, and it could be an attitude issue. It could also be a total non-issue. He suffered some major financial consequences of not going in the top 10 like he expected. I think how you respond to those consequences is the important part. If it doesn't alter his behavior then we are in trouble. If he internalizes it and realizes he needs to listen to the people trying to help him grow, we could get a really nice player.

I agree I am not skeptical about 26, but I am excited by KPJ. I may be overrating Beilein's ability, but he met with the kid 1 on 1, so I will defer to him.

From what I have seen personally, those come to Jesus conversions tend to happen when someone is near bottoming out, or had a traumatic life experiecne, etc..

KPJ has just gone from being a broke freshman college student to having over a million $$ and being an NBA player...traveling all over the country, etc..

More like a reward for bad behavior than a punishment.

Great point. I trust the front office so far. If they continue to draft iso scorers that flame out, I will rethink it.

I think many questions will be answered about him in the summer league. Strengths and weakness. But an important part of this is that he will be working with Beilein.
