2019 Draft, Pick #30 - Kevin Porter Jr., USC

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Given the type of player he is athletically, the two inches of height and three inches of wing span are always going to matter. Thus is true in terms of defense and getting his shot off against good defensive centers.

He has an ascetically pleasing offensive game, but he's going to be difficult to build around as a starting center due to the lack of rim protection and the space where he prefers to operate. Now he's young, if he develops a jumper and can play a Love like role out of PF, but if not you better have prime Ibaka on the roster.

You keep saying "lack of rim protection", but he blocked 1.6 shots per 36 as a rookie. That ain't bad.

Are the rockets sending sengun when they trade porter? If so, hope cavs be all over it.

Sounds like he never really stopped having issues in Houston. They were just small enough to stay out of the news.

I’ve been watching astounded for two years now as the Rockets invested more and more in KPJr. It seemed totally insane to me - like, it’s literally impossible to have a winning team culture if this guy is a starter, let alone your featured PG, and talent wise he’s decent but not the second coming of MJ or Lebron. I can’t say I’m any less confused after reading that piece. Seems like the owner or GM is just really stupid?

He's 6'9", offers zero rim protection, doesn't shoot 3s, takes very few shots outside of 10 feet, and averages less than half the number of assists as Jokic. How exactly is he anything like Jokic?

I like Sengun too but I don’t think you can compare any big man to Jokic. Jokic isn’t just the best passing big man ever, he might be the best overall shooter that has ever played center as well. Jokic gets only 2% (!) of his field goal attempts on dunks, less than some guards, but he still has a higher true shooting percentage than Shaq or Kareem did.

He is the first coming of kpj. How dare you disregard his talent like this!

But in all seriousness, he had to have incriminating photos of the GM at the Christmas party or something. Probably the one with bubbles

He was 6'9 as an 18 y/o. He was 6'10 last year. And now says he is 6'11 in bare feet.

One can assume wingspan and standing reach have proportionally increased, as well.

Most Houston fan sites I have seen seem to have him firmly in an untouchable category and as one of the franchise cornerstones, if not their most important one.

IDK about Jokic, but I certainly see him getting to the Sabonis tier.

They are not trading him as a sweetener to get off Porter any more rhan the Cavs would have trade Mobley to get off Loves deal.

Yeah, it's obvious the Rockets aren't attaching him to dump KPJ when they can just cut KPJ and eat this year's salary. I'm not suggesting Sungun is bad, only that he's hard to build around. Some of my concerns are allievated if he truly is 6'11" barefoot. The NBA actually takes the measurements now so the Rockets won't get away with gilding the Lilly if he's not.[/ICODE]

Isn't Senguin about the best player on their team? Ha. I don't think they're looking to drop him.

Also, sad about the KPJ crap, but gosh I don't think he deserves any more from the NBA, hopefully goes to jail for this (assuming true). But if he doesn't, then I suspect his talent's will take him overseas where he'll probably dominate, but eventually get arrested or worse.

The only thing I can figure is that the GM looked at KPJ's raw numbers and "potential", and was determined to extract max value from finding a diamond in the rough". He thought KPJ could be "fixed", and acquiring that kind of talent for nothing was the kind of great good fortune teams need to have a successful rebuild.

Figured he had a winning lottery ticket, and it turned out to be a counterfeit.

Talked about garland and the cavs at the beginning. JJ is very high on Sengun. I doubt rockets would package alperen just to get out of KPJ drama.

If he’s legit 6’11” his potential is growing with his height

He's not. That's gotten walked back already.
Here's a source for the 6' 11" number. It's a quote of Sengun. It doesn't sound like a measurement.

Here's another 6' 11" source, from the Rocket's team page:

Where was this walked back?
