2019 MLB Trade Deadline

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
My point with comparing Albert and Manny to modern stats...………..is winning and getting to the World Series. and stats. Stats are great, but winning is better. You can post all the stats, WAR and all that......…..give me the '27 Yankees and I'll whip you ass every day/game/series. Guess its just a miscommunication on stats.
You're ignoring posts now. Please go back and read my posts before you continue to respond. We've already addressed the points you continue to make..

Everyone wants wins. But how do you build a winner? Put the best players on the field... and how do you measure how good a player is? You even do it yourself when you bring up home runs, batting average, and RBI's--STATS. The stats you are using just are not the best way to measure players. There have always been better ways to measure players, and today those ways are available to us.

Um is the trade official yet? That could make things weird if Reds cancel it because Bauer isn't healthy

This isn’t basketball; definitely won’t happen.

We traded for Arroyo, he’s on the 60.

In that case over the season its situational. If those are the final season stats..........gimmie the most RBI....And runs scored. That in a nutshell is my point.............
@Coyote850

Let me give you four different scenarios:
  1. One out, nobody on in Progressive Field. Batter A hits a 380-foot home run to right-center.
  2. One out, bases loaded at Progressive Field. Batter B hits a 380-foot home run to right-center.
  3. One out, nobody on at Kaufmann Field. Batter C hits a 380-foot flyout 7 feet short of the wall in right-center.
  4. One out, bases loaded at Kaufmann Field. Batter D hits a 380-foot flyout 7 feet short of the wall in right-center. The runner on third tags and scores.
Which of these batters is the best hitter?

There are a few different answers.

Answer A would be to say that one of the hitters is definitely better than another, even though each one did the exact same thing--hit a ball 380 feet to right-center.

Answer B would be to say that all the hitters are equal.

Answer C would be to ask more questions. What pitch was thrown? What was the expected MLB result off that pitch? What was the weather like?

Just because Batter B put in 4 RBI's doesn't mean he's a better hitter than Batter A. When we rely on old counting stats like RBI's, this is what we end up with.

Just because they all had the exact same result doesn't mean the situations were equal. This is similar to using a basic metric like OPS.

When we put together as much information as we possibly can, this is when we get into advanced stats and modern day baseball.

I really hate quoting myself, but you continue to bring up the exact same points while refusing to engage in a discussion.

Player A is 100% the better player, and if you just went with RBIs you would have picked player B. When I evaluate a players number, I look at where they were batting in a lineup since that will say what type of production I am looking at. A leadoff man, needs good OBP% etc, but I don’t expect a ton of RBIs. A 4 Hole player should have the most RBIs on the roster in a sense, so I expect that from them since they should have way more opportunities. I also look at the ratio of HRs to RBIs. If you have 20 HRs but 40 RBIs that in my mind says you either don’t have any supporting cast or you have a really bad contact rate. I mean if you have 15 HRs and 70 RBIs then it looks like you are a good hitter overall. Sorry i look at all the small things when I am looking at stats and baseball is the game stats matter beyond the basic stats.

We traded for Arroyo, he’s on the 60.

The trades are always pending physicals and the Indians essentially knew and accepted Arroyo was hurt and is bringing him in as is. If the Reds found a red flag with Bauer, they could negate the trade, but it wouldn’t have been made official until the physicals were accepted. Since it was made official then the Reds where okay with the physical

Stop, all of you stop.

He doesn't like advanced stats and doesn't want to learn them. He is allowed. I thank many of you for helping me learn more about baseball and more about advanced stats.

We don't need the endless debate about it though. So lets talk about the new guys. So do you think Reyes would make a good left tackle for the Browns?

His size says DE honestly so I would expect him there. He is a little light to play OLine lol

Holy shit does he have the frame for it. Maybe TE?

Honestly first thing I thought when I saw him is holy shit, Dave Winfield's son, lol

But Winfield was so much smoother of an athlete. Really under appreciated player that never gets mentioned as one of the greats.

I haven’t looked up his sprint stat speed to see how his speed is and I would guess he would be at least a decent athlete if he is in the OF. If ya look at the dude next to football players, you would think he would fit in more there than as a baseball player. 6’5 at 275 is more typical of the size of a DE. I don’t feel like doing the research tonight so remind me another day, but I could figure out if at least his athleticism on paper would translate to the NFL

He quite literally said “I guess he was average.”

Which was...probably too stupid to comment on, and certainly doesn’t need any further explanation.

I think your inability to formulate an argument without a glaring logical fallacy is pretty telling.

Just stop, stop comparing Puig’s league average season to that of Babe Ruth and Albert Belle.

It’s really dumb, and while a feel a pretty good amount of embarrassment for you, I can only implore you to stop.

It’s kinda cute when AZ gets all hot and heated ;)

I only like it because its a bone injury not a joint injury. Kluber should be 100% by playoffs.

I think Carasco is fooling himself a bit if he believes he comes back this year after chemo. That said, if that's what he needs to tell himself to be motivated I don't care. Honestly I rather Carasco beat Leukemia than the tribe win the series.

That all said...I really rather both happen.

Anyone that thinks Cookie will return this year needs to completely remove that hope from their thinking . He won’t be back this year. He’s looking at 8 months heavy treatment and about 16 months of maintenance. Basically its 2 years until he returns to his former self, and that’s only if everything goes well. It’s Leukemia. It’s doesn’t have a 100% cure rate.

Fun fact, Dave Winfield is the only person ever drafted in all 3 major sports (sorry hockey)

He played TE in highschool, got drafted in the 17th round, played basketball in college and won the big ten championship. He was drafted by both the NBA and ABA.

Final fun fact, Dave Winfield was drafted as a pitcher. (early first)

Honestly one of the greatest all around athletes of all time.

"aren’t very important to me" Most important words in your post. Whats important to the Indians is what matters. Not you, not me..... You can see it in these guys eyes......The morale of this team has sky-rocketed within 24 hours. They believe..........

I would argue that the morale of this team has been very strong for well over a month ... what is still to be determined is how all the current moving parts impact this team

I agree that it could get even better but they still need to work through the upcoming demotions of players that have contributed to the best record in baseball since early July

Sure, he's allowed.

But when he invents strawman arguments and assumes we should be able to call him out on it. Assuming advanced stats would say that legends arent great when they clearly show that they are is old school, Joe Morgan levels of ignorance.
