Because after an unexpected hot start (13-4 on April 13), they are the trending towards the team everyone expected (8-19 since) and figure to be out of contention come July. They are in the midst of a rebuild and would seemingly be willing to eat salary in a "lost year" to get back a prospect. They already showed a willingness to do it in their trade with the Mets.
But I do think it is complicated. Edwin's prorated salary at the deadline will be ~$10m + his $5m buyout. How much of that are the Indians willing to pay? The more $ the Mariners eat, the better the prospect they will require. Is that worth it for 2-1/2 months of a player? How much better does that make the Indians' lineup?
Also, for what it is worth, I believe Tampa Bay is already paying for $5m of his salary.
At the deadline I get, but the comment about "sooner rather than later" doesn't make sense to me. I think he'll definitely be on the move come July, but I'm not convinced the Indians can wait that long.
