2022-2023 NBA Regular Season Thread

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Wow, they’ve really found a way to make the last day interesting. Before the play in the main interesting margin was in the playoffs/out of the playoffs. With the play in, there are three important margins - play offs vs play in, 7/8 slots in the play in vs 9/10 slots, and out of the play in. All three very important.

The play-in also screws the teams who earned the 7/8 seeds throughout the course of the season...they shouldn't have to play additional games to justify their playoff berths.

The Cavs last year were a playoff team, period, but didn't get to play in them because late season injuries hampered us in games we shouldn't have had to compete in.

Knicks played their playoff rotation heavy minutes (nearly 40 for a few of them) sans Brunson and Randle and lost to the (tanking?) Pacers. Oof. George Hill and Buddy Hield combined for ten threes on the bench :chuckle:

My MVP ballot would be:

1a) Embiid
1b) Giannis

(Quite a bit of distance here)

3) Jokic

Sorry, Jokic lovers, but although he's a little better than the top 2 on offense, Jokic is among the worst defenders in the league and this will be an issue in the playoffs. He makes Kevin Love look like Olajuwon.

If there was an offensive player of the year award, sure give that to Jokic. But as long as defense should be a consideration for MVP (and it should be), give it to Embiid or Giannis.

I view it differently. I thought it was too watered down to have 8 of 15 teams (more than half!) assured to make the playoffs. Six out of 15 seems about right. The play-in is well structured, too, with the 7 and 8 seeds only having to win 1 of 2 games. This also allows teams that were derailed by injuries but who are playing well at the end of the year (Lakers!) to have a chance in the playoffs. The West has some pretty good teams in the play-in this year, and it made for an exciting finish to the season.
