Following a wildly successful road trip the 7-2 Guardians arrive home for a three-game series against the 1-8 Chicago White Sox. Only the Miami Marlins at 1-9 have a worse record and only the Colorado Rockies have a worse run differential than the White Sox -26.
The Sox have been held to an astonishing 16 runs in 9 games. In the second game of the season they scored 6 runs against Detroit. In their other 8 games they scored a total of 10 runs. As a team they are hitting .196/.584.
To make matters worse, their two best run producers, Luis Robert and Eloy Jimenez, are out with injuries. Robert has 4 of their 15 RBI’s.
The rebuilding Sox have some recognizable faces at the top of the lineup, led by Luis Robert Jr., but are full steam ahead in a rebuild. They traded 10 veterans since July — most recently Dylan Cease — and now feature one of the league’s wobbliest pitching staffs — The Athletic
The star of their pitching staff has been lefty Garrett Crochet, who has a 2.00 ERA in three starts covering 18 innings. But Crochet pitched Sunday and the Guardians will not face him this series. Pitchers other than Crochet have combined for a 4.76 ERA.
McKenzie, Allen, and Bibee will go in that order for the Guardians. The White Sox have still not named a starter for Monday as of 9:00 a.m. Very strange. Could be a bullpen day. So far they have only used four starters thanks to an off day and a rainout, but today they're playing for the fifth day in a row so they need to come up with another starter. If it's a bullpen day they run the risk of depleting their bullpen in the first game of the series and having limited options the next two days.
McKenzie was very shaky in his first start, allowing 4 runs, 4 hits, and 2 walks in 3.1 innings. His fastball averaged just over 90 mph. His big mistake was a belt-high fastball to lefty Dominic Canzone which resulted in a 3-run homer.
McKenzie only started four games last year and is working his way back, so it’s probably a break that he’s getting the lowest scoring team in baseball when he’s still not 100%.
