A Native American group is planning to file a $9 billion federal lawsuit against the Cleveland Indians and their "offensive" Chief Wahoo logo, according to CBS Cleveland. The suit is expected to be filed next month.

Robert Roche, a Chiricahua Apache and director of the American Indian Education Center, is planning to file a federal lawsuit in late July against the Cleveland Indians organization. Roche, who is also the leader of the group People Not Mascots, says the lawsuit will challenge that the team's name and Chief Wahoo logo are racist.

“We're going to be asking for $9 billion and we're basing it on a hundred years of disparity, racism, exploitation and profiteering,” Roche told WEWS-TV. “It's been offensive since day one. We are not mascots. My children are not mascots. We are people.”

Have to wonder if the Tribe FO doesn't welcome something like this in a way, to basically have their hand forced so as to mitigate public backlash for when the logo is finally retired. My issue would be if something like this caused the team to never use the logo, which would be whitewashing the team's history. No idea on the validity of his suit but if he is taking a page from the onslaught facing the Redskins it may have some legs.

I get how the Redskins name could be seen as offensive. I totally get it. But where does this stop? The Indians aren't profiting off Chief Wahoo. Their logo could be a block of wood and they would still sell merchandise. It's irrelevant in my eyes.

I won't be mad if they do away with it, but it's just annoying how these kinds of suits will continue to pop up. However, I KNEW this was bound to happen. I figured it would have a long time ago.

So you're saying the folks who filed this case actually expect a settlement anywhere near $9 billion dollars? I think they're doing this to bring attention to their cause. This has nothing to do with money.

I personally find it greatly offensive. I am not gaining anything monetarily by saying such.. Think about it for a second, then ask yourself, why not just fucking change the mascot?
