But frankly, a lot of what he said is correct. All 3 of his boys can play, and each are a show that brings paying customers. I remember the first time I heard this guy boast, watching his demeanor and approach, and thought he just had that real good Cali weed. So, I think he deserves some appreciation, as his plans were at first mocked and laughed at...but he was absolutely onto something, and the saga will continue while all 3 are relevant in the league.

Now, how about this:

We've discussed LBJ playing with his son, which would be cool for a bit. How about 3 brothers playing together on the sane squad? Based on their profiles, this something that can work from an x's and o's perspective? Might reinvent the death lineup, with the artistry that would be on display, and fun as hell.

Nevertheless, LaVar was not as insane as I thought, and he has leveled up to mad genius for me.

LaVar is that loud-mouthed, self-promoter whose over-the-top smack talk doesn’t come close to matching up with his game. Much of what he says either isn’t true, like when he said he could beat MJ 1-on-1, or is exaggerated, as was the case with the Big Baller Brand (BBB), LiAngelo, & Lonzo. BBB was just a bad product that was significantly overpriced and was plagued by poor customer service. Lonzo is a good player, but he’s not this transformative talent. LaMelo is the best player, but, for all of his highlight plays, I’m not sure he plays enough defense or makes enough winning plays that you can win with him consistently.

In short, LaVar is about 90% hype and self-promotion and 10% reality. Clearly, he loves his kids. I’m glad he’s finally taken a back seat and is allowing his kids to the forefront. He’s a used car salesman who fathered & raised 3 very good ball players.

It's crazy for a civilian (i.e. someone not a former NBA player) to get two kids to be NBA starters though. Do you know the odds against that? Deserves credit. Wouldn't blame him for exaggerating to try to push his third less talented kid either. Loyal dad.

LaVar had a cup of coffee in the NFL, even if basketball was his love. He was on the hoops team, but didn’t really play much at Wazu. You don’t play D1 sports without having some talent & athletic ability.

Everything LaVar has done has been geared towards making his kids professional athletes. He married a tall woman because he wanted to have big kids and knew it would give him the best chance to ‘breed’ a pro athlete(s). He trained and coached his kids growing up. He became their loud-mouthed hype machine.

LaVar is actually not all that different from Marv Marinovich, although he was bigger, more talented, & more annoying than Marv. His kids also didn’t rebel against him and turn to drugs, as happened with Todd Marinovich.

Annoying, but he's kind of entertaining.
If you find LaVar entertaining then you must enjoy Stephen A. Smith monologuing and ranting at no one in particular.

I don't watch Stephen a but he's good for laugh every now and then. I thought ball was so annoying when he came on the scene, but then I took a deep breath and realized everyone is different and laughed at myself and him because he's so over the top.

Venus + Serena > 3 Balls.

I thoroughly enjoyed Steve Naismith’s rant on Ben Simmons back though.

Speaking of, he's been terrible on the NBA Pregame shows recently. Way over the top and would extend sessions and stay on his same lame point. Greeney seemed uncomfortable, like who let this guy on this show and thought it would work?

A better team up: all the Balls and James's. LaMelo, Lonzo, Lamongello, LeBron and LeBronJr.

I'm going to hold off on giving him all this credit, though. I think he did the opposite: he took an incredible opp, 2 NBA sons/3 pro basketball playing brothers and kind of biffed it. I think son no. 3 not only succeeded despite his dad, but would have been the consensus no. 1 pick had he gone even a vaguely traditional route. His BBB brand is essentially about himself, as his sons have moved on to the traditional apparel companies. He had a good vision I guess (I think apparel companies selling $500+ sneakers are fucking vultures but that's me), but a genius doesn't screw it up like he has done.

Calling Liangelo relevant is quite the stretch. Averaging 5 points per game in the G-League at 23 years old doesn't look very promising.

I'm a big believer that Lavar did some serious damage to Lonzo's career by only furthering unrealistic, lofty expectations. Lonzo's game started to take off when Lavar got the hell out of the way, and it's possible that could have happened sooner.

We'll see how Lamelo fares. The Lithuania stunt could have been beneficial, but that kid could have picked his school before all of that went down or gone the Ignite route. I'm of the belief that playing against adults sooner did wonders for his maturity and game. I do believe that he benefitted from Dad not going on nearly the same level of tour before his career even started in the same way he did with Lonzo.

Ultimately, my feelings are the same now as they were initially. I feel bad for the kids, particularly Lonzo, for having to go through all of that nonsense when they shouldn't have had to focus on anything more than their game and their career. I learned more about Lavar's influence on his kids from Liangelo's shoplifting ordeal. Give me Mr. Mobley over this clown every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Big Baller Brand was his attempt to gravy train off the hard work put in by Lonzo. Screwed his son out of a great shoe deal.

I think Lavar has mental issues.

I also think people with mental issues can achieve pretty incredible things when they don’t give a shit about the standards that society has in place.

I also also believe that people like him ultimately burn every bridge they come across, including ones with their family.

Give and take. Matter of what you value. You have your Michael Jacksons and you have your Todd Marinovich’s. Then you have the Ball’s somewhere in between.
