You should play Xenogears... If you don't have it, go grab ePSXe, your 360 or PS3 controller, and get the torrent for at least Disc 1.
IMO, it's the greatest game ever made. It's a jRPG, but the dialogue, story depth, character development actually surpass Planescape... I know, that's a bold statement, but you've got to play the game to see what I mean. The battle engine is also more entertaining. The game is easily, if you do everything, 65-70+ hours, but you can do a standard run through in about 45.
The second half of the game gets a lot of shit because it takes a story-telling approach, with far less interactivity, but by that time in the game you're so engrossed it doesn't really detract from the overall experience. I actually like the second disc because it speeds up the plot and let's you get through what would've amounted to another 60+ hours in only 20, so I wasn't to upset.
I actually have played it, one of my top JRPGs of all time. I'd put it somewhere on my list, just not top 5. My problem with JRPGs is that I naturally prefer having the choice of shaping your story the way you want it, which is probably why Torment is my favorite game. Also, they've basically never really evolved past the PS1 days. The combat system is still mostly the same save a few cosmetic changes, the storylines aren't as good as they were before, and they're even dumbing the games down a bit; FFXIII was ridiculously bad with it's neverending, 40 hour long hallway. If you re-made games like Chrono Cross, FFVII, VIII, X, Xenogears, etc. and spruced up the graphics, there's almost nothing separating it gameplay-wise from the new JRPGs. Western RPGs on the other hand seem to be suffering from a general dumbing down and mainstreaming of everything, but at least Kickstarter is proving to be a good way for old school, intelligent and mature RPGs to get made. There are already 3 in development with Wasteland 2, Project Eternity and Torment 2, hopefully with many more to come.
Still, I appreciate the quality of the great ones when I play them. The genre just isn't my favorite.
