book recommendations RCF book club

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I'm about halfway through Light Bringer, the new Red Rising book. It's been great thus far. It's a page turner like Dark Age, the previous novel, which has a sort of Storm of Swords feel where the author just wantonly kills off about a dozen significant characters. This book has only killed off a couple so far, but I have no doubt that's changing soon.

If you're in the mood for a space opera, Red Rising is a pretty good choice. It's The Expanse directed by Michael Bay, but like The Rock era Michael Bay.

Edit: I read another fifteen pages and shit did indeed go down.

I recommend this book for every sci-fi/fantasy fan. Undoubtedly one of the best first books I've ever read in the genre. The plotting is so tight that the book just zooms past.

The Alchemist is always an exemplary mood lifting quick read, my dudes!

Slaughterhouse V is an excellent anti-war book. I love the humor and dry wit as it deals with heavy subject matter.

I want to check out Vonnegut's other work like Cat's Cradle.
Harrison Bergeron is a great short story he wrote.

If you have not read Breakfast of Champions, I cannot recommend it enough.

I finished Light Bringer, the most recent Red Rising book, last night. It's a 600ish page book and I got through it in about four days, so safe to say I enjoyed the experience.

One of the characters might be the most despicable little cunt I've read in a fantasy novel since Joffrey Baratheon.

Just finished last night as well. Really enjoyed the book, but always think it's tough with POV books when they get this big. We had a whole significant cast of characters/storylines cutout from the book.
Abomination
We will flip back to them in the next book, but with one book to go, we lost some time to flesh out some of the storylines.

Some thoughts:
-Wish the Quicksilver storyline turned into something more. Always loved his Character and would have loved to of gotten more of him.
-Felt like the Figment was an idea Pierce Brown switched on and wrote out quickly, unless he connects this to the Minds Eye being one of the other mind devices released in the wild.
-Loved Cassius Story Arc
-Curious about Kyber and whether or not she is some sort of Agent of someone else.
-I like the idea of the color virus, but felt this was super late to introduce it. Changes the whole landscape at the very end of the story.

Just gonna put all of this in spoilers...

I didn't really mind the Quicksilver ending, although it's possible we may see him come back in the final book. I wouldn't be surprised if seeing Darrow unite the Rim with the Republic and bring the Obsidians back into the fold causes him to have a change of heart. His issue, remember, was that he didn't believe in the people.

I agree about the Figment plot line. What the fuck was that? The last book made it seem like it was going to be super important and then it just...wasn't. They did drop that line about their being, what, six of those things out in the world somewhere? Or at least six of a similar sort of creature. Maybe that will come back in the final book?

Agreed on Cassius, although when he and Darrow had that serious talk, I knew he was going to die. Brown laid it on a little too thick there, imo. That was so obviously a pre-death conversation.

I also felt that the duel between Darrow and Fa was a little bit too derivative of the Mountain and Viper duel from Game of Thrones. Even down to him trying to get Fa to confess and Fa wearing some ridiculously heavy armor and still moving faster than a man should. It must have been intentional, but it was weird.

I was interested that they killed off Atlas. The series seemed to be setting him up to be the big bad guy, although I guess now that's obviously going to be Lysander, presumably with the Mad Minotaur as his number two. I do wonder if what happened to Cassius will cause Cassius' mother to break with the Core. Probably not. She seems like a real piece of shit.

I think my favorite part of the book was the fight between Lysander and Rhone. Rhone was a badass.

I finally caved and bought a kindle...I have about 9 actual books that are still on my to read queue, so it may not get much use in the near future but its so small and convenient.

Is it worth rebuying books on Kindle I already have hard copies of? I am thinking of things that are total doorstoppers like Oathbreaker, TWMF, or a late Harry Potter

If you're going to re-read them, sure.

And a tip for Kindle books...add any Kindle books you're interested in to a wishlist and check it a few times a week. Digital books often go on sale for two or three bucks. Easy way to build your Kindle library.

Good to know. Yeah I reread those and a few other books every 2-3 years

I'm still annoyed that we don't get auto notifications whenever books we want are on sale. It's clearly something that should be done.

Yeah, considering Steam emails me literally every day if something on my wishlist goes on sale, it'd be nice if Amazon did the same without making me go and look myself.

Just finished Lightbringer. Wow, this definitely recaptured my love for this series. Not that Iron Gold or Dark Age were bad, they just felt different.

I thought this was the last book, so I left wanting more which will ne interesting to see how all of this ties together and comes to an end.
