Just some rampant speculation, but, Grant is a Cleveland native, and is being named as a player that will likely be cut in the one time luxury cap dump that will be coming up. That means he'll be available at a relively cheap cost to us. He would be in a position to back up at center and get some minutes at PF ....just a thought that was running through my mind after seeing in rumors that he would be cut loose soon.

Well we are going to need a big body because we certainly lack a player in that department. We need someone to body up with the big time PF's because we have no one that can do that right now. If Brian would like to come to Cleveland for fairly cheap, I wouldn't mind it at all. Mabey 10-15 minute a night? Tony Battie type minutes.

Another guy that I think is going to be cut is Theo Ratliff. I wonder if he could become a possibility also.

Yuck. He is not what this team needs. He never plays up to his abilities and would be more of a liability than anything else.

True, but we don't need Brian to play huge minutes everynight. Mabey just 10-14 minutes to give Z a little rest. Asking him to box out and protect the hoop for that short amount of time isn't asking much.

Anytime you bring in someone to your team with that kind of an attitude, you are asking for trouble. Even if its only for 10-14 minutes, you don't need someone that doesn't go out there and try their best. I think bringing him to this team would be a huge mistake - when we are on the verge of good things.

Ratliff on the other hand, I would welcome to this team in a heartbeat. Although I think he'd still want somewhere around the MLE to sign with a new team. He is a defensive monster.

Grant is broken at this point. Before his body betrayed him, you always loved his story of an undersized player gutting it out against men larger than himself. But when I look at Grant now, it's like remembering Vlade Divac towards the very end of his career. At that point, players like that do more harm than good, even if they're out there for short segments at a time. If you want a big, at least get a big with a decent set of knees and not just a walking "6 fouls to give" machine.

Any player looking to sign for the minimum is looking to contend. We certainly should not pay them more than the minimum. They won't be playing for the 1 mil. They'll be playing to win, so they'll be playing at their max skill level, if given the chance.

If Brian Grant wants to continue to be lazy, he won't run off and sign a minimum deal. He'd go to the Bahamas for an early retirement party. So if he signs, count him to play well. He did play solid before his contract. But he never came close to living up to it. But if he gets some spot minutes as a backup, I can see him playing well as a role player. I'd take Ratliff over him any day of the year, though. His defensive prowess is exactly what we need off the bench here. An upgrade over Tony Battie, for sure.

Just so you all know, anyone released by the one time amnesty will almost certainly be signing for veteran minimum. Reason being they are still getting paid their full contracts from the team that released them. So it's not like they're taking a pay cut playing for the minimum.

Personally, I'll take any of these guys to be on our third string for the vet minimum. That kind of cheap depth is a luxury!

Also, I believe that those players won't be released for a good while yet. So Ferry certainly can't bank on getting any of them, and should look to address our backup center/toughness needs prior to that. Which is why I say those guys could be brought in as third string, as our second string will hopefully already be addressed.

Grant was brought up last week as a possibility. If he's cheap then I'd be fine with it. He's as good as anyone else who would be out there as a backup FA C/PF. I also believe he's a native of either Columbus or Cincinnati, not Cleveland.

I don't know where the idea of Grant having a bad attitude or being lazy came from. He's always been a hard worker who was willing to do the dirty work. He's had some injury problems lately but in a more limited role those might not be as big a worry.
I also have no problem with him not wanting to come to Cleveland 5 years ago. Things have changed and if he can help now than that shouldn't matter at all.

Brian Grant has suffered from bad karma since he snubbed the Cavaliers, which seen his game deteriate.

Ok seriously, Grant is a viable option just like Ratliff. Grant gives you a banged up version of Varejao, while Ratliff will show us how Ben Wallace would play without knees. These guys may have dropped off a level or two, but they are still solid veterans, and their experience would be invaluable.
