Building a Gaming PC

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Just to further @TyGuy point, 144hz monitor is incredibly important for an FPS gamer. I've been using 100+ now for 10 years and I can't imagine going back. I watch my friend play on his normal 60hz and I don't understand how he can play it. I get sick watching his game.

IPS monitors have great color and depth of black but they're new and a 100hz+ monitor is not cheap. If you're an avid FPS player, hz > picture quality. If you don't play many FPS titles then a 4k IPS monitor might be the right choice for you.

Also, Tyguy, I just built two PC's with 1070's and they're incredible. Nvidia did a great job with this series of cards and AMD can't even sniff their technology atm. I know AMD is getting ready to drop their new line of cards but i'd be shocked if they could perform like the GTX 10xx series of cards. Even the 1060 6gb for $250 is a great card.

I'm thinking about selling my 980 on ebay and getting a 1080... it looks incredible.

Sell that bitch. I got 285 in total after fees for my 970. I'm shocked I got that price frankly.

Anyway, I picked up the asus 1070 oc. The box didn't come with the gears of war 4 code, so I called frys and they hooked me up with it. Going to run some benchmarks now.

Agree 100%.. If you don't need the IPS, don't pay for it. You'll get a much better deal with greater fluidity (refresh) by getting a TN or VA panel.

Although they do have two panels (asus and I forget the other) that are 1440 p ips gsync panels with 165 hz. The last time I checked there was some major quality control issues with both panels though.

Which is why I stuck with 1080 p tn for my gsync. That and the monitor cost be less than 300 altogether vs the close to 800 for one of those.

The lady thought I was an idiot for buying a refers monitor on eBay, but I've had it for months now and it's been amazing.

And the brands are Acer and Asus.

And yeah, that's true those panels exist; I should've pointed out, I went ultrawide 34"... For me, ultrawide is just as awesome as the high refresh and the IPS..

Trifecta so to speak.

This monitor was $1200 before tax... :(

But it was worth it in my opinion.

Sometimes you can get some great deals on eBay.. I just wouldn't buy anything that overclocks.

Although, you can also find some fantastic CPUs that are QS grade engineering/quality-control samples.

A great deal on there is the E5-2687W v3.0 QS... Probably the best CPU on eBay. Buy two, run 12 core/24 thread workloads for pennies on the dollar.

Cpus are like the strongest thing on the planet. In all my years I r never had one die. Gone through countless video cards, had faulty ram, had hard disk die, motherboards with some issues. Never a CPU. I wouldn't hesitate to a buy even a used CPU that's been used for batting practice. More reliable and stronger than Japanese automobiles.

Man...

Intel 80286 died after 7 years.
Intel 80386SX died in 2 years.
Intel 486 w/Pentium Overdrive... like 6 months?
Cyrix 6x86MX.. bit the dust after an overclock.. I brought it back, but it was never the same.
AMD Athlon K7, died in 6 years.. heavy overclock.

Maybe I've been lucky? Everybody says they never have their video cards die and mine always do.

I've had video cards die for sure...

I overclock the shit out of my components..

In trying to get a recording of my gta v benchmark run... the new GeForce experience has changed s lot of things.

What FPS are you getting? Where are your settings?

There is an EXCELLENT page by Nvidia for GTA V specifically for the GTX 1070/1080 and Titan XP series boards.

I used it to fine tune my settings.

http://www.geforce.com/whats-new/gu...nvidia-control-panel-dynamic-super-resolution

Very good performance. I'm not seeing a framerate increase from my 970, but I can crank up more settings to get the same performance which is very good. 70-90 fps with dips as low as 42 or so frames per second in heavy CPU areas.

@TyGuy -- these are my settings.. I've fine-tuned this so that I'm getting ~95 FPS on average, min FPS ~80, max FPS, obviously 100 (g-sync).

I don't think I've made any noticeable sacrifices in quality; so this should fare quite comparably to ultra settings all around:

Code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

<Settings>
  <version value="27" />
  <configSource>SMC_AUTO</configSource>

I've also turned on FXAA in the Nvidia Control Panel to supplement the anti-aliasing. I've used DSR, but.. I'd rather get the FPS than the improved look.

Filename: settings.xml

I tried dsr at 4x which is royghky 4k I believe? I cranked up msaa with it and it pegged my GPU at 99% and the framerate was at 24 :chuckle: Now, I can run dx dsr just fine if I bring down msaa to 2 with txaa. It produces a good image with good performance. Righ now im rocking 4x msaa plus tsaa, no dsr.

What is your smoothness setting for your dsr? I know default is 33 %.
