YAHOO GAME PREVIEW

Washington Wizards forward Caron Butler earned the nickname “Tough Juice” because of his hard-nosed play and durability.

That reputation may have taken a hit while Butler has been sidelined with a hip injury, but the All-Star is expected to return to the lineup for the first time in more than a month on Thursday night when the Wizards host LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Butler has missed 16 straight games and 19 of the last 21 because of the injury, which also kept him out of the All-Star game. He was originally diagnosed with a strained hip flexor and listed as day-to-day, but an MRI discovered a small labral tear of the left hip joint that extended his absence.

Butler, though, returned to practice Monday and should start in this contest.

“Caron is going to be probable, so we add a little ‘Tough Juice’ to the lineup,” Wizards coach Eddie Jordan said. “And we’ll see how it goes.”

Butler said he has felt fine in practice other than some tightness after Tuesday’s shootaround.

“I’ve got a nice rhythm. I’ve got a couple of practices under my belt. I’m not feeling any symptoms,” Butler, who turns 28 on Thursday, said after practice on Wednesday. “It’s a big day with my birthday. Things seem to be really flowing right now, so tomorrow would be a great game to come back.

“If I wake up tomorrow and feel the same way, I’ll definitely be on the court.”

Butler’s return should help an injury-plagued Washington team that has slipped into sixth place in the Eastern Conference. The Wizards (31-32) have been without Butler, two-time All-Star point guard Gilbert Arenas (knee surgery) and center Etan Thomas (open heart surgery).

Arenas and Thomas have both returned to practice, but aren’t ready to play.

Washington also lost All-Star forward Antawn Jamison to a lower back strain in the final minute of its 105-97 win over Milwaukee on Tuesday. Jamison is expected to play Thursday.

Despite the injury problems, Washington is 7-5 since its season-high eight-game losing streak from Jan. 30-Feb. 11. The Wizards hope to move back to .500 for the first time since they were 24-24 on Feb. 6, but that could be a challenge against James’ Cavaliers (37-28).

James is averaging 37.1 points, 8.1 rebounds and 7.4 assists while leading Cleveland to five wins in its last seven games. He had 42 points, 11 boards and seven assists on Wednesday, but the Cavaliers couldn’t overcome a 15-point first-quarter deficit in their 104-99 loss at New Jersey.

“We lost the game in the first quarter,” James said after his seventh 40-point performance of the season. “So we started off, we didn’t show no adjustments on the defensive end and were very lackadaisical, myself included. And we let them just do what they wanted to do in the first quarter.”

James will try to help the Cavaliers bounce back against the Wizards, whom he has dominated over the last two years. He’s averaging 30.1 points, 8.2 rebounds and 6.3 assists in his last 15 games against them - including 10 postseason contests. The Cavaliers have won 12 of those games, including eight playoff games.

The Wizards, though, are hoping Tuesday’s victory will help them get back on track at home, where they had dropped six of their previous eight games.

“It was a much-needed win,” Jordan said. “We needed to make home feel like home again.”

CONNECTIONS

Wizards’ Head Coach Eddie Jordan was selected by the Cavaliers in the second round of the 1977 NBA Draft (33rd pick overall). The New Jersey Nets quickly acquired Jordan midway through his rookie season…

Antonio Daniels played college basketball at Bowling Green…Daniels is originally from Columbus, Ohio and attended St. Francis Desales High School…

Brendan Haywood was originally drafted by the Cavaliers in the 1st round (20th overall) of the 2001 NBA Draft…

Wizard’s assistant coach Phil Hubbard, a Canton native, attended McKinley High where he was named Ohio High School Player of the Year in 1975…the same high school as Eric Snow…he also played seven years with the Cavaliers, owning the team record for most consecutive shots made in a game (15)…

Cavalier Head Coach Mike Brown spent three years with the Wizards from 1997-2000 as an assistant coach and scout…

Cavs forward/center Ben Wallace spent his first three seasons in the NBA with the Wizards.

New game for us and i hope so new victory....If we play this one like we play against Nets that would be very big problem for us....

Hopefully Delonte can bounce back from the awful game last night...He should be fresh at least.

Also Delonte has connections to the DC area too. he was the High school (All-Met) player area of the year in the dc/md/va area in 2001.

By the way that girl is Monique Curry star bball player at Duke and the WNBA.

"WNBA" and "star" should never be used in the same sentence, unless it's something along the lines of "The WNBA is going the way of a dwarf star, and should phase out of existence at any moment."

weren't the wiz supposed to be battling the cavs for playoff position all season? oh, nevermind...

We definitely need to put Wally in the starting lineup...Everything will be different if he get start....Joe and Delonte must play better and LBJ need to feed more Wally especially in the 2nd half...Lets get that win in DC....

LeBron's coming off a 46-minute game. The rest of the team better show up, our last two first quarters have been atrocious.

I can't guarantee a win this time. They look absolutely shit on the first day of a back-to-back. LeBron will probably exert 100% of his energy AGAIN just to keep this close. And more than half of the roster will blow wide open shots and point blank lay-ups to contain LeBron's run.

We don't look like much of a team without Z right now, are we?

Someone other than Lebron, Devin and Damon Jones is going to have to start hitting some outside shots if we want to win these games. It only gets harder from here. Pavlovic is going to need to contribute, and so is Wally. He got off to a good start last game but fizzled out a bit when we needed it most.

If we play the same defense we did against New Jersey, no point in watching.

Look, I know we are struggling to stay healthy, but we are a "no excuse" team, so I picture us giving better effort in our brightest spot of the team. Defensively, this team cannot give up 100+ a game because thats not our style, we wont win many games with LeBron scoring 40-50 points and especially with this cast and the way it has struggled to find a groove or stay healthy.

Anyway, hopefully we can pull out the win. We really need this win on the road if we wanna breathe 50 wins(Even though we would have to win every game from here on out besides 3-4.. Ugh)

After Mondays game I would've almost guaranteed back to back road wins but after watching last night i'm not even sure about this one. The Cavs beat them with 6 players they should be able to beat them with a full squad... right.. right?

Hopefully i'm not drinking by halftime again.

Note to Mike Brown:

Hello Mike,

My name is Splitz and I am a member of RCF.com and am an avid and consistent viewer of the Cavs. Please for the love of motherf*cking god let Delonte actually play PG tonight and tell that big freak of nature Lebron to work off the ball. My boy PiP calls your current system "LeISO" which I think is a fancy way of saying that you have no clue what you are doing on that end of the floor. Oh yeah, about that genetic freak of nature, could ya maybe force him to post up because he is literally one of the most unstoppable forces within 10 feet of the hoop. Thank you very much Mike and good luck!

-Splitz
