Let me start by saying I am not in favor of replacing Scott at this time. If you remember, one reason he was hired was because it was believed that he was a favorite of LBJ. (Well, so much for that.)

After LBJ made his decision, it was decided to follow the OKC model and go in the tank with young players, and build through the draft. He has played the youngsters for the most part. To say Coach Scott hasn't been given a full deck would be correct.
However, one of the byproducts of tanking is a lack of focus by the team and a disinterested coach. The problem is getting the players attention back again with the same coach. Not so easy.

So what would be the goal next season? Make no mistake the Tank will be dead after the next few games. RIP.
The Cavs MUST make the playoffs next season to make progress with the young players, and attract potential FA's. (one in particular I can think of).

So if you replace Scott; who do you want?
Here are 2 names for your consideration:

Mike Brown - His career W-L record is through the roof. Very defensive-minded as we know. That is a team weakness. But a strong defensive team does not have long losing streaks. Much playoff experience. One strong drawback would be he probably would not be an attractive calling card for LBJ to return.

Brett Brown - ast. coach for SA Spurs. Joines the Spurs in 2002 and on the bench since 2006. Been a championship HC in lesser leagues.

Re: Nominations to replace Coach Scott

Brian Shaw- former Phil Jackson disciple and currently Frank Vogel's lead assistant in Indiana. Was a candidate when we hired Byron.

Scott Skiles- excellent defensive coach, but his offenses have always left something to be desired. In his defense, he's never had an offensive player of Kyrie's caliber at his disposal. Has coached Jason Kidd in Phoenix, Kurt Hinrich during his best Chicago seasons and most recently Brandon Jennings.

Mike Malone- one of the top assistants around, and currently with Golden State. Has Cavs connections and a very good defensive mind.

Mike Budenholzer- Popovich's right hand man since 1994 and he's still only in his mid 40's.

Ron Adams- currently and assistant for the Bulls and has been there with Thibs since he got hired. Prior to that he was with the Thunder from 2008-2010.

I'd obviously make offers to Phil Jackson and Coach K, but I think these guys are more realistic.

Re: Nominations to replace Coach Scott

I'd like Malone or Shaw. I think that is about it. I think this is the most dangerous part of firing Scott. The guys I would ideally replace him with already have jobs.

Re: Nominations to replace Coach Scott

Rick Adelman might be getting out from Minnesota...though after his performance in Minnesota, I'm not sure I'd really want him.....especially his defensive philosophy

Re: Nominations to replace Coach Scott

Stan Van Gundy.

Brian Shaw.

Scott Skiles.

Mike Malone.

Re: Nominations to replace Coach Scott

absolutely not scott skiles. he doesn't last. i'd go with shaw or malone for sure.

Re: Nominations to replace Coach Scott

But Stan Van Gundys going to ruin our chances at Dwight Howard.

Re: Nominations to replace Coach Scott

I want to keep Scott until at least 2015. I think its only fair.

Re: Nominations to replace Coach Scott

Stan Van Gundy is my number 1 for various reasons:

A. Builds arounds teams assets and not to the detriment of them (i.e. doesn't have an offensive system per se, offensive system is built around players)
B. Squeezes the most talent out of each player
C. Can handle and press elite players
D. My top priority: Has a great handle on implementing a defensive system - Countless times his defense ranked top 5 in ppg (08, 09, 10, and '11 finished 7th amidst a horrendous sideshow). I know it helped that he had Dwight, but he also had Nelson, Carter, Turkeyglue, Refer Alston, Bass, Petri Dish, Lewis, Reddick, Anderson, for support. Suffice to say, he is adept at building a defensive system.

Yes, he was a tad overzealous with his handling of Dwight, but that situation was cartoonish & Dwight was/is a child. A year away may have done him some good.

Mike Malone & Jeff Van Gundy round out my top 3, but Stan is my clear #1. And if we have a chance to nab him and pass because of Scott, it will be a catastrophic mistake.

Re: Nominations to replace Coach Scott

I'm a Stan Van Gundy fan. His teams play offense and defense.

Re: Nominations to replace Coach Scott

I'm I little wary of the Van Gundy brothers since all of their success has been predicated around dominant big men. Jeff with Ewing and Yao then Stan with Shaq and Dwight.

I'm not sure we have the right roster to fit their strengths.

I think paying him his salary has been compensation enough. We don't owe him anything more than that.

John Lucas was helping us tank for LeBron and he got canned for Keith Smart who finished the job and then got pushed aside himself.

Paul Silas had the team at 34-30 in LeBron's 2nd season when we gave him the boot.

P.J. Carlesimo came in for Durant's rookie year in Seattle, endured a difficult first season and then was fired 14 games into his and Durant's second season.

We've been fair to Byron. He's being paid to coach this team and get the most out of them. Personally, I don't think he's doe that.

I agree. that would be a pretty crappy move by the cavs to make Scott wade through 3 seasons with a shit roster and then just dump him when the roster is good. Scott has been a good company man and sat through this "rebuild"...the least the cavs can do is give him a chance to win once we have a legit, complete roster. i say the dude has earned the right to coach 2 more years just for the sitting through 2+ years with a roster that was in the bottom 5 in the league.

this team has looked good when its roster is in decent shape. they spent most of the season playing surprisingly well against top teams. then dion and kyrie go down and the team goes to shit...our 2 main creators and ball handlers go down, of course the team is going to go to shit. can anyone really expect Scott to be winning without Dion and Kyrie? without those two guys this roster is pretty garbage.

the players know that the season is over and the organization is focusing on the draft, so naturally they are going to check out mentally as well. i don't think any coach could manage to get such a team to win games. chill people.

Re: Nominations to replace Coach Scott

Brian Shaw is easily at the top of my list.

The Van Gundy brothers are very abrasive and they sometimes rub players the wrong way.
And there is no way we're bringing back Mike Brown as head coach.

Re: Nominations to replace Coach Scott

Phil Jackson. Jerry Sloan.
