Saturday's NBA Free Agent Update: Cavs open contract talks with NBA journeyman
By R-C Staff
Updated at 12:31 a.m. on Sunday, July 18

Matt Barnes: The versatile shooting guard has been linked to a number of teams this off-season, with the Cleveland Cavaliers becoming the latest. Reports on Saturday indicate that the Cavs and Barnes have begun contract negotiations, which could become difficult based on the number of teams that have shown interest in him. Last season for the Orlando Magic, Barnes averaged 8.8 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. In his seven seasons in the NBA, Barnes has played for seven teams. The Boston Celtics and Miami Heat are also said to be in the running for Barnes, but only have the veteran's minimum of approximately $1.6 million to offer, where as Cleveland and other teams could offer more.

Re: Windhorst: Wing Search On

Actually, the number of contending teams that would like Barnes on their team is exactly why you make a short term deal with him for more than other teams can offer right now. Come the trade deadline, turn him around for an expiring and a future first rd pick.

:chuckles:

Alright, alright..I can buy that for now. Hopefully Chris Grant is thinking the same way.

Re: Windhorst: Wing Search On

ATL, BOS, CHI, and ORL(unless they soured on Barnes form this past year) come Feb. are going to be thinking about having as many physical wings as possible to sick on Wade and '****, so Barnes could definitely have some value to any of those EC teams. Whether or not we could pry a 1st out of them is the main issue.

BOS: On one hand, they are geared to win it all for one or two more years, so they might be willing to go all in. On the other hand, knowing that their core will soon be sipping on prune juice, they might be resistant to giving away any future picks

CHI: Chicago has a future 1st owed to them from CHA, so they may be willing to part with one of theirs if they felt the need to add Barnes.

ORL: Not sure if they want Barnes back

ATL: They're young enough to consider giving up a future 1st, but the top end depth of their squad is already at the 2/3(J Johnson, Jam Crawford, J Crawford, Marvin Williams, Josh Smith) so they might nont feel the need to add a Barnes type player unless they had an injury

Re: Windhorst: Wing Search On

#Cavs had further talks with F Matt Barnes. Interest is mutual. Cavs like his toughness, Barnes looking for PT. Talks likely to continue half a minute ago via TweetDeck

I'm not really sure why they want Barnes. He would have made more sense if LB was still on the team.

My best guess is that he was relatively effective in playing for up-tempo teams such as Golden State and Phoenix and they like that he adds toughness along with experience in playing a fast paced game.

Re: Windhorst: Wing Search On

I have always liked Barnes, but I just don't get it.

I think he is better than Moon, but they are the same player and if Eyenga makes the team, that would make 3 players that are all the same type of player.

I think this is the plan that Chris Grant was referring to at the beginning of the offseason that the Cavs would execute. :chuckles:

Barnes and Moon are very different players and Eyenga is a 2, not a 3.

Re: Cavs Negotiating Deal with Matt Barnes

I think Barnes is a far superior defender to Moon. Moon can flush it better though

Re: Cavs Negotiating Deal with Matt Barnes

Good, I thought this deserved its own thread. I'm all for this signing to go down. Hopefully we are offering a reasonable amount of money that exceeds the contending teams, plus we should definitely have plenty of minutes available between the 3 and the 2 on occasion that Matt could take advantage of.

Re: Cavs Negotiating Deal with Matt Barnes

Stockpile 3s that can guard Wade and LeBron. That's the plan. :D. Sessions is a 6'4' guard that will give us the flexibility to play a big lineup that could defend the heat when LeBron is playing point.
