The Portland media is claiming that the Cavs are going hard after Batum, even mentioning them specifically as the one team that is going hard at him.

Lillard will start for Portland. Bank it. After that, it's Aldridge and some pretty good questions. Will Portland be able to retain small forward Nic Batum in free agency? Cleveland is making rumblings about throwing the vault at him. Will guard Wesley Matthews perform with the kind of consistency that will make him a starter? You hope, but you don't know. Also, raise your hand if you want to know who will coach these guys. All that needs to be settled.

But one league source said to expect Minnesota, Cleveland and Toronto to chase Batum vigorously.

Living here in this corner of the country, I think Batum is by far one of the most (if not THE most, yeah I said it) underrated players in the league. He is pretty much everything that ANY team that does not have LeBron James or Kevin Durant would be looking for: 6'9", 200, EXTREMELY athletic, and set the Blazers franchise record this year with 10 threes in a game. Also a lock down defender, period. That is an amazing all-around game for a dude who is only 23.

He's underrated because considering his age and skill set, I seriously think he is deserving of something very very close to the max contract. And yet he may not get it. He turns 24 in December and still has while until he hits his prime, yet he's already developed a hell of a repertoire.

If we threw him the 4 year max, I would not in the least bit be upset. He would be an amazing young piece to add to this team and he'd fit in like a glove. I just think that the Blazers realize it too and may also go the max route with him after balking at $9.5 million a year during the season. If it comes down to a sign and trade, it will be interesting what we can work out.

Hed fill a need for us and would be a good fit. Not sure how much I would pay him, but id love to get him.

Kyrie - Dion - Batum - TT/ Andy - Andy/Zeller

It would allow gee to move back to his best spot: energy off the bench.

I love his game, but I doubt we'd get him. But if you insert him into the starting lineup and we resign Gee. I think we'd have a low playoff seed team.

Irving
Waiters
Batum
Andy
Zeller

Bench
Sloan
Gibson
Gee
Thompson
Samuels

I think that squad could make the 8th seed.

Re: Cavs seriously interested in Nicolas Batum

Always been a big fan of Batum. Extremely long, he can guard PG to PF, athletic, he can finish in transition and nail open 3s... Not sure how much we should pay him though.

Re: Cavs seriously interested in Nicolas Batum

I'm thinking 4yr/36mil is a fair offer.

Re: Cavs seriously interested in Nicolas Batum

Will take a max contract to get him... Not sure if that would be a smart idea.

Re: Cavs seriously interested in Nicolas Batum

You don't throw the max at Nicolas Batum... especially when you're in the position the Cavs are in.

Definitely fair, but he's an RFA and Portland will match fair offers. Don't know if we should pay him the amount it'll take to pry him free from portland.

Re: Cavs seriously interested in Nicolas Batum

There is just no way you toss Batum the max contract. This is a guy that is around ~80 in the league in PER (17.32). Don't get me wrong, he's a great, young player with a lot of upside. But for a team in the Cavs' position to max him would just be totally irresponsible. And anything reasonably under the max, Portland will certainly match.

Reminds me a lot of Trevor Ariza. Great defender, long, athletic. Can he be a central piece in a contender? Probably not. So you don't max him.

I would normally agree, except for this: the CBA dictates that the longest we could offer him is 4 years. By the time Kyrie and Tristan's extensions kicked, Batum would be a FA again, and we could chose at that time whether to tie up more money in him. Untill that time, if Dan Gilbert is willing to shell out massive bucks to a FA who is actually willing to come to Cleveland, what better one than a 23 year old with huge skills and upside, who happens to play the position of our biggest need.

Re: Cavs seriously interested in Nicolas Batum

If his contract would either be on the last year or expired the year that Kyrie and Tristan's extensions kick in, why not?

But for a team in the Cavs' position to max him would just be totally irresponsible.

Re: Cavs seriously interested in Nicolas Batum

portland just offered hibbert the max

Wow! Indiana is going to have to think long and hard about that one

If Portlan gets him, I cannot see them matching an offer in excess of 13 million plus for Batum.
