Here's one I just cooked up.
Cleveland Cavaliers trade:
Larry Hughes, PG/SG, 3 yrs 38.4M left
Anderson Varejao, PF/C, Resigned for 7M per year
Ira Newble, SF, 1 yr 3.4M left
Golden State Warriors trade:
Jason Richardson, SG, 4 yrs 51M left
Adonal Foyle, C, 2 yrs 18.6M left
Sarunas Jasikevicius, PG, 1 yr 4M left
Why Cleveland does it.....
Ever since drafting "Batman" in LeBron James, the Cavaliers have been on a seemingly never ending quest to find his "Robin", or at the very least another player capable of scoring 20-25 points on any given night without needing LeBron James to hand feed him the points. Jason Richardson is more then capable of creating his own offense and scoring in bunches which is one thing this team desperately needs (not to mention an actual offensive system, but that's a whole other debate). Richardson is also only 26 years old which means he's still young enough to continue to improve as a player. His contract is the only negative, but with Gilbert giving Ferry the A-OK to go into the luxury tax, its not as big of an issue. Adonal Foyle has a terrible contract and isn't much better as a player, but he does block some shots which is something this team definately lacks. Foyle would give this team another legitmate center, so he might be able to squeeze 10-15 minutes out per game backing up Zydrunas. Jasikevicius is good friends with Z and playing with one of his best friends might do him some good. He could challenge for some backup point guard minutes. If he doesn't crack the rotation, he only has one year left on his contract and if you watched the playoffs, you know he's one of the most entertaining towel waivers in the league.
Why Golden State does it.....
The Warriors rode Nellieball as absolutely far as it could take them last year, including a shocking upset over the #1 seed Mavericks. However, once they matched up against a team their head coach didn't know like the back of his hand, they were badly exposed for the gimmicky offense/defense they really were. Mainly, the Utah Jazz front court murdered them on the glass and scored at will in the paint. Enter Anderson Varejao. Varejao is limited offensively, but he would provide an instant upgrade to the Warriors biggest weakness; rebounding. Varejao averaged 11.3 RPG as a starter with the Cavaliers this year and with his energy, mobility, and willingness to run around like a maniac setting screens, he seems like great front court fit for Nellieball. Larry Hughes has a poor contract, but he does have one year less on his deal then Jason Richardson which is always a plus in today's money fueled NBA. Hughes has also shown in the past that he's at his best in a free-flowing offensive system in which he is free to make things happen with the ball in his hands. Hughes would also step right in and be the Warriors best perimeter defender. Ira Newble is just cap filler as his salary nearly matches Sarunas's. Basically, the Warriors get a massive jolt to their biggest weakness AND dump their two worst contracts. When you factor in they also have guys like Monta Ellis and Matt Barnes waiting in the wings to fill minutes at the 2 and 3 spots, they can afford to move Richardson to pick up some rebounding.
Thoughts?
