He' a lot of talent at an MLE price, even if he is a bit like Drew on Defense--

Charlie V likes thought of joining LeBron
By Charles F. Gardner of the Journal Sentinel
Jun. 3, 2009

Bucks forward Charlie Villanueva made the rounds at ESPN headquarters in Bristol, Conn., on Wednesday, taking part in the morning First Take program, doing a chat with ESPN Deportes and also speaking with interviewer Freddie Coleman on the Tirico & Van Pelt Show on ESPN Radio.

It's clear that Villanueva is well aware of the Bucks' difficulties in trying to re-sign him this summer, when he will be a restricted free agent. It's possible the Bucks won't even be able to make a one-year qualifying offer of $4.6 million, which they are required to do by June 30 if they want to retain the right to match offers by other clubs.

Bucks general manager John Hammond has stated the team will not exceed the luxury tax level to re-sign its free agents.

Villanueva was asked what he thought about the possibility of joining the Cleveland Cavaliers, who are expected to make some lineup changes after being ousted by Orlando in six games in the Eastern Conference finals. The Cavs were bitterly disappointed at falling short of the Finals after posting the best regular-season mark in the NBA with 66 victories.

"I understand the situation Milwaukee is in financially," Villanueva told Coleman. "They don't want to go over the cap or what not (actually the luxury tax level). Whatever team decides to make the best offer, I'm going to think about it.

"Cleveland definitely is not a bad spot. I've played with LeBron. I played with LeBron in the McDonald's All-American Game, and we played well together. Is there a possibility? Yes. Will it happen? Time will tell."

Coleman asked Villanueva if he could be a difference-maker in helping Cleveland reach the NBA Finals.

"I think I would be able to help out a lot," Villanueva said, "just the fact I bring my versatility and create mismatch problems. One of the reasons Orlando is in the Finals is because of Rashard Lewis. They have a legitimate big man (Dwight Howard) that demands attention, and they surround him with guys that can play on the perimeter."

James desperately needed some scoring help against Orlando, and former Bucks guard Mo Williams and the other Cavs struggled to provide it. The Cavs also were unable to defend effectively against Howard and could be searching for help in the post.

They also may lose power forward Anderson Varejao, who has a player option for next season. If Varejao does not return, that could free up money to spend on a free agent.

Villanueva was asked about his take on the Finals, and he said not to count out Orlando, although he picked the Los Angeles Lakers to win in seven games.

"I think this series will go all the way down to 7," Villanueva said. "A lot of people want to have Orlando as an underdog, but they're a team that surprised a lot of people, beating Boston and beating Cleveland. They beat Cleveland pretty bad.

"I always love going for the underdog; I want Orlando to win. But experience and No. 24 (Kobe Bryant), it's tough to pass on that."

No, it won't.

People were talking about having a test in the CBA to join this forum. How about giving that test to a couple of journalists too?

Ugh dude I dunno what to say about Charlie V. He'd become by far the most talented bigman on this roster, but damn I'm just not sure he has the work ethic, heart or patience to be successful on a championship team. I'd love to be wrong though, and just about everyone was wrong about Mo.

Also, he's actually got a very good set of post moves, I'd love him to develop that part of his game more and be a force in the paint. But I guess if he did that he wouldn't be signing for the MLE.

I want him real bad. Go get Chandler in a trade and the frontcourt is set for a long time.

Villanueva is a talented player but he has a couple of issues besides the defensive one that Douglar mentioned. While he has the range I think he settles for too many threes. His rebounding is subpar or should I say below average for a PF and he has been known to be inconsistent.

Much like Maurice Williams the Cavaliers would have to be sure that Villanueva would conform to the culture of the Cavaliers namely rebounding and defense.

Considering that he will likely have to settle for an MLE deal from someone he could be one of the few real values at such price because of his talent.

Maybe if the Bucks actually played defense since he was drafted, he'd be better at defending...

Ignoring the elite big men such as Bosh or Stoudimire who the Cavs have only a remote chance to acquire, all of the obvious low post options realistically available to the CAVs have flaws...Charlie V, Chandler, Kaman, Camby etc. Complicating the picture is the fact that the CAVs only have a few bargining chips. Furthermore , the CAV need more than just a single "big" to man-up with guys like Howard. They need an athletic wing player, backup SG or PG. The trick for Danny Boy, as MYoung23 suggests, is to find the value among all of the options available.

I'm pretty sure the author was referring to Gilbert would be willing to spend more money if we lose Varejao. We're so far over the tax limit as it is, you have to think we're nearing as high as even Gilbert is willing to go. Sure, I believe him when he says he's willing to spend more if it results in us winning, and therefore more value to the club, but I also don't think that he's willing to spend much more than where we are at now... and I can't blame him.

By the way, anyone else find it funny that if you take a marginal eighth seed like Milwaukee, and add LeBron, they would be the favorites to win the NBA Championship? I mean, Mo is a big upgrade at point guard for us. Michael Redd would clearly be an upgrade at the 2. Bogut would be an upgrade at C, and if we want Villanueva... not to mention R-Jeff as a sixth man...

Anyways, I think Villanueva's worth a look if there are no better options for big men.

if we could actually get charlie for the MLE I think we would be getting a truly talented player for a hell of a steal money wise.... is he the greatest fit or best player defensively no absolutly not but guys this dude can flat out ball and he can score the basketball and he is young

and at the MLE we should be arrested almost with some of the other contracts that are handed out in the NBA yearly...We would still have the LLE a few vet mins contracts not to mention Big Ben and Sasha to throw around in some trades

again Charlie is not the perfect answer...he has MANY problems including the fact that he does not have any hair...weird...but I think he would help us begin to solve alot of our offensive problems being a guy who can score the ball down low by himself especially a young talented guy at that cheap

I think he's super talented, but give me a damn winner on this team. I don't want to take another chance on a talented player choking during the playoffs because they never been there before.

Is CV a unrestricted free agent?...if so, maybe offer him the MLE and we could still acquire Chandler via trade for Sasha and a pick? that would still leave us Ben's contract.

So, what you are saying is that pretty much everyone, except James (also maybe not West), is a choker based on the series with the Magic?...Look we got beat. Forget about it and let's fix the problems that were exposed. Yes, we did not play our best but that happens sometimes........The Magic, on the other hand, played to perfection.

Charlie had a +7 last game against the Magic. Sign him up too.
