Collecting Obsessions

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Got into action figure or "adult collectibles" the last 8 months. Not quite at 40 year old virgin status but fuck, I've amassed a lot.

Mostly wrasslin, horror, Star Wars, and then older toys from the 90s for my nostalgia kick.
I've mentioned that I collect Marvel Legends. Last year's Haslab finally arrived today.

Devourer of Worlds meet Devourer of Noodles.

I started to get into Marvel Legends just in time for this Haslab. Received mine today as well but still need to unbox it tonight.

Definitely went a little overboard late 2021/early 2022 on Marvel Legends in general so I've tried to start being a bit more picky about what I add to the collection. Have a few from that time that in hindsight were bought more for the BAF piece than the figure itself.

My main collection obsession is Marvel comics, mostly trade paperbacks and some omnibuses. So that doesn't leave me much shelf space for Marvel Legends on top of it.

Is there anything folks are into that is generally not popular?

Not a guilty pleasure per se, but something not mainstream.

Or things that people feel is trendsetting?

@Sebastian not to turn this into the watch thread again but my family did end up getting me a watch as a graduation gift.

I really do like it. But I think my next watch I'm going to go out of the box a bit with a Nomos Tangente Neomatik.

It’s no longer trendsetting, but sports cards.

The boom post COVID is… unreal. There are times months go by without being able to even get a quality box of cards at retail price. People who liked the hobby prior to COVID were able to amass a literal wealth because of it (I’ve seen a guy bring a box of JUST Patrick Mahomes rookie autos where if he sold everything, he’d have multiple millions of dollars strictly on quantity).

It’s also a really interesting hobby, because the main manufacturer is committing what I can only assume is a crime given their legal requirement of posting odds on a box by sending juiced product to a company that sort of dominates the industry. It’s a wildly debated topic, which the manufacturer ignores and the company just thinks it isn’t a big deal. Essentially, the breaker pulled the top four value cards out of the top products of a single sport, and the odds were so wildly insane that just to have less wildly insane odds, they had to sell north of 40 million IIRC in product. Which would be done almost entirely from TikTok/Twitch/Whatnot streams.

I’ve watched said company break 65k worth of product, and the break fill in under 2 minutes… Only for a guy who spends a ton with them to hit cards that in total were worth over 130k, just himself.

Here’s the link to the maths.

And this tweet includes one of the top 4- sold for 204k

I made over $7,000 during the pandemic on eBay. And I'm a mostly casual collector.

I remember getting a $100 box of 2013-14 Prizm back in 2016 or so. Put together the set, including the Giannis RC. Got the Giannis RC graded 9 right before PSA shut down (my estimate was 9, and I was right). Sold it in 2020 or 2021 for almost $2k alone. Giannis RCs during the pandemic peak were going for $2k. REGULAR RCs, mind you, not the Prizm parallels.

That time was wild.

It's slowed down a bit, though. And box prices for both new and old stuff have gone up while available product has greatly dwindled. Even some of the 90s junk wax stuff was in demand for awhile. Remember the Mark Jackson 1990-91 Hoops Menendez card? Went from a cent to $20.

The issue with the product is product prices up, singles value down.

Why spend 1200 on product when I can buy two-three chase cards for the same?

But then again… when the single breaker gets the best cards, they’re just funneling money.

I’m an obsessive collector of fine wines. Like, to a really excessive degree, where I’m probably going to have to sell some at a loss to help fund my retirement

The silver lining is that I know a lot of other obsessive wine collectors and we get together and drink them, it’s fun

Would my unprotected shoeboxes full of 1970s baseball cards be worth anything?

Depending how they held up, and what there is, maybe! Vintage isn’t my expertise, but at shows, even low end graded cards of HOF fetch solid amounts.

Got mine in too! It’s quite the figure; still trying to figure out where to put him.

I just got these from Hasbro Pulse the other day, I’m a big fan. (The LeBron figure isn’t actually that tiny, just perspective lol)

@Sebastian Now that Christmas is over I decided to get myself a gift to match the car.

Nomos Autobahn Director's cut. Coming in tomorrow and I'm pumped. Certainly different from the other watches I own but that was part of the attraction.

Look at that!

That is sleek and stylish, almost a 70s vibe to it!

Glashutte is a mecca for amazing watches.

You're spot on with the 70s vibe, that's exactly what they were going for. Especially with its lume at night, definitely looks like an old school speedometer.

Which is timely since my car just has one giant curved screen now.

I opted for the director's cut because of that funky metal band and they only made 175 of the that reddish orange color (still glows blue). For the director's cut they did make an all black but I have too many black dial watches. The other one is blue and yellow which definitely does not match with my OSU degree.
