Dan Gilbert

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I liked Gilbert.

That being said, if you look at the situation he started with when LBJ came here in terms of the absolute gold mine we had in terms of assets, 8 or whatever it was first round picks, etc.., plus an owner with an open wallet, it seems that where we are right now in term of personnel, youth, picks, etc., is not....exceptionally impressive.

Rattle off the list of active GM's who have a title.

That's what is concerning in all of this.

We finally found a guy that was, at worst, good....and we let him go based on the owner meddling in day to day operations.

It's scary given where we are. It could all unravel pretty quickly.

A few months ago in this thread, I outlined why I thought Dan Gilbert's comic sans letter was a mistake...and many here disagreed.

Now after David Griffin's departure, I can't help but think about the cost that letter may have going forward. Look at LeBron's barbershop Uninterrupted video with Draymond when he talks with clear disdain about that letter and how much it bothered the people around him (especially his wife and his mom). Without Griffin, or a similar ally, in the front office, it is very difficult to imagine LeBron wanting to stay on board with an unchecked Gilbert in charge...unless the Cavs win the championship next year. Now what if Gilbert never wrote that letter, and the relationship between LeBron and Gilbert never soured in the same way? It would be much more likely that LeBron decided to stay in Cleveland regardless of whether the Cavs won or lost the championship next year....the prospect of staying in Cleveland, playing with Kyrie, and building his legacy would probably outweigh whatever marginal increased chance he would have of winning by building a superteam to rival the Warriors.

But the cost goes beyond LeBron. What about someone like Paul George or another free agent that might otherwise be sold on sacrificing personal glory to play for the Cavs because of their "culture"? What will they think about playing for an organization run by an unchecked Dan Gilbert? Without the letter, Dan Gilbert might be best known as a somewhat whacky owner who is willing to spend to win. But after that letter, he became defined by that letter, fairly or unfairly. Gilbert will always be known as the owner that responded to his best player leaving in the pettiest, most unprofessional manner imaginable. And I'd bet that, all else being even, a free agent who had a choice would prefer to play for an owner without such a reputation. And that calculus will only become easier when LeBron is no longer a Cav (whether through free agency, trade, or retirement).

I read the letter recently. Wasn't that bad tbh. It probably hurt because a lot of it was true.

Why Dan. Why :(

Better make some good fucking personnel decisions this Summer.

I'm not trashing Gilbert. I'm just saying that considering the assets/money he had available, I could see an argument there may have been other GM's who could have done at least that well. I'm undecided myself, but it's not an unreasonable position to take.

He's acting like Art Modell circa 1961 to 1965.

fuck him.

If Gilbert trades Kyrie Irving he'd damn for sure better be getting back someone like Anthony Davis or Kawhi Leonard. Anything short of that caliber of a return is a colossal mistake...

Sure but could do better is relative.

Griff assembled a roster that won a title.

LeBron or not, that already makes him better than 90% of the GM's in the league.

If you make this move and bring in Jerry West, great.

If you make this move and bring in Chauncey Billups? Let's all jump off a bridge.

Agreed -- I don't like Billups at all. But I'm not heading down to the 480 Bridge until I see who replaces Griff.

One underrated thing about Griff was that he didn't do stupid deals. That's actually pretty damn important.

Yeah, I'll wait to see how this offseason plays out before jumping to any conclusions.

But Gilbert better fucking pull something off. Something good.

I have thought for a while that Griffin is slightly above average. That slightly is skewed by the amount of GMs in the NBA that are just unreasonably bad

Guys, Griffin started with a lot of fucking assets. He was only ever cost checked on Delly and we don't know how much of that was on him.

I was in favor of keeping Griffin because I've seen some really fucking bad GMs and I know at least Griffin would never be that. But he also burned through a shit ton of assets on questionable moves.

I'm not giving him credit for the throw in of JR Smith. That trade was for Iman Shumpert. And Shump fucking blows. He gave us a good year, but he is just so bad now that it wasn't a good return.

2 firsts for Mozgov was a bit much in hindsight.

The Korver trade IMO was pretty bad. He didn't help at all against the 1 team that mattered and that first rounder was basically out last non big 3 meaningful (non Cedi too I guess) asset

He went into the season with 2 players on the roster capable of guarding Kevin Durant. LeBron James and Richard Jefferson. That ended about as predictably bad as everyone on this board said it would.

He just gives 0 shits about defense and we ended up being a horrible defensive team when we needed it most. Like I said he isn't a bad GM, but I also wouldn't call him a good one. He was handed about the best possible hand that you can get. If Kyrie doesn't hit that shot in game 7 and LeBron and Kyrie don't ascend into another galaxy Griffin probably isn't even here this year.

I know everyone wants to kill Dan over it. I really don't think they should.

It's either legitimate chaos or a bunch of fake news to make the blow of the entire team getting nuked next year more bearable for the fans.

can't we just let lebron buy this team or something?

seriously.
