Dan Gilbert

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
It’s funny because the narrative was that Dan Gilbert refused to pay GM’s. meanwhile, he did something that a billionaire would find even more reprehensible than burning a pile of money with gasoline. Which is spend deep into the luxury tax aka gave other billionaires more money!
The refuse to pay GM thing is a bit of an unfair narrative anyway.

Danny Ferry actually quit.
Chris Grant was (rightfully) fired because he hadn't shown capable of building a winning team in four seasons, and because he hand-picked hiring Mike Brown for a second stint, which was a disaster. You could blame Grant for Anthony Bennett too even though that one wasn't entirely his fault, but he made the pick anyway.
David Griffin and Gilbert really didn't get along, and the more we learn about Griff I think we dodged a bullet in not extending him.

He only got a bad rap about Griff because all of the big name NBA media love Griff and all the leaks that come with knowing him and buttering him up.

Love Petty Dan.

Why is it a conflict of interest? Dan has no fiduciary responsibility to the NBA regarding approvals for ownership changes.
The vote involves a direct business rival. I wouldn't be surprised if Silver asked him to abstain.

The NBA has nothing to do with that. The mortgage businesses having nothing to do with the NBA. Silver has no basis to ask Gilbert to abstain.

Plus Dan abstained anyway.

It's not petty at all. Abstaining from the vote literally doesn't mean anything. If he vetoed the vote then sure that's petty. He took a neutral stance which is completely fine considering the situation. It's his chief rival in the mortgage business. Their companies have taken shots at each other in recent years.

Ishbia had announced that his company wouldn't do business with any brokers that also did business with Rocket Mortgage, which is a pretty crappy thing to do to those brokers. Don't blame Dan in the least. Probably would have voted no but though that would be unethical so he abstained instead.

Dan Gilbert's business absolutely does. And yes, Silver absolutely could. Part of a review involves looking at the potential owner's finances, something I highly doubt that Ischiba wanted to give Gilbert access to. Any more than Gilbert would want the Ischiba family seeing his. This isn't difficult to see.

@Lee any insight to any of this?

Dan and Matt hate eachother, have for years. UWM is the largest wholesale lender in the nation, and while rocket is the largest overall lender, they do a ton of wholesale business too, number 3 I think.

Anyways, they are constantly battling each other, one of my best friends is an underwriter there at UWM, pretty shitty work environment from what he tells me, but so is Rocket, where he has also worked.

This is nothing new, has been going on for years. They even fight over their supporting of their alma matter Michigan State. I cant imagine we will do any trades now with Phoenix, which sucks, they have a glut of SF's. But both Dan and Matt have put their hatred for each other above anything else including profits and business. Both suffer heavily from little mans disease.

BTW, UWM got crushed doing this and has backed off the stance of not working with brokers that work with Rocket, they thought being the largest it would work, but it did not.
