Beat writer Brian Windhorst speculates that Delonte West could be traded before the start of free agency.

West has a $4.6 million contract, but only $500K of that is guaranteed if he's released by August. In other words, he's essentially an expiring contract. The Cavs are expected to be active before free agency to upgrade the roster -- and therefore lure King James back.

Nothing too eye-popping, but it could conjure up some interesting trade scenarios.

Could be a possibility early for a team just wanting to clear cap. Like maybe Deltone West/2nd round pick for Kelenna Azubuike.

We'd have to take a contract. Why would a team trade us a draft pick for Delonte unless they wanted to keep him? They could just make us pay them $3M for a pick instead of taking Delonte unless we're saving them money some other way.

To clear cap, 4m is a lot of money. Especially if you are in the market for the big free agents or a team in the luxury tax.

Also maybe to a team that might want some extra money to re-sign one of their own players. Like Memphis might need to for Rudy Gay?

I actually want to know why he wouldn't be used in a bigger deal.

Unless bringing in some average player and/or a late 1st is our way of convincing LeBron to stay.....

Who's to say that won't happen? If anything, this piece of information adds to the notion that it could happen.

Brian has mentioned this trade possibility numerous times... basically ever since Delonte signed such a tradeable contract. I don't think this means anything imminent is on the horizon. Just a possibility being written about because he mentioned it in an article.

James Jones/18th pick for West could be possible with the Heat. Jones isn't fully guaranteed but his buyout cost more than Wests. Could save the heat additional money for free agency.

Edit: From what i read on shamsports if Jones is not waived by the 30th of next month then is contract is fully guaranteed. But it says for the final 3 years if he is waived he gets 1.8m for the first year, 1.9 for the 2nd and 2.1 for the 3rd. Overall his contract is worth around 14-15m in the remaining 3 years if not waived. This is if i understood it right lol, just move the cursor over his name and it gives you the details.

Well yeah, but if they were looking at bigger deals why wouldn't it say something about him possibly being packaged with other players? It just mentioned him.

Well I realize that. I was under the impression that some people thought that we would trade him for simply a draft pick to a team under the cap, which didn't make a lot of sense to me.

Why trade with the Heat and give them even more cap space?

Cleveland made the Shaq trade before FA started last year, I expect another move to be made before July 1st also.
