Denzel Ward

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I still don't understand why/how Derwin fell to #17 in the draft.

There were some worries that he didn't make enough plays in the passing game. Frankly some of the concerns were the same people were talking about with Julius Peppers at Michigan: he's a strong safety but this is a passing league.

I always felt he was an athletic freak, who cares if he still needs some refinement in coverage. He's been exceptional so far this year on a quickly improving Chargers squad. His pass rush skills really cover for the loss of Bosa and hides the area he is still working to improve.

The effortlessness for which he reverse pivots out of his bail is so good.

9:30, shadowing JuJu, he's defending a deep out.

He has outside leverage, on a bail technique, against Big Ben's 1st read. His leverage is meant to drive the receiver inside.....JuJu recognizes this and tries to shade in before breaking out....Ward reacts like someone has told him the route being run. Plants on his lead leg and reverses out on a dime.

On a play that drives him 12-13 yards down field, where his underneath coverage is way too shallow, it didn't even matter. He's just glued to him. Ward's perfect coverage leads to a sack, on a play he made a really difficult move look like a warmup drop. Dude is special.

I don't mean to be mad online but ESPN gave their mid-season DROY to Bradley Chubb and not Ward.

...

What in the fuck.

After a slow start, he does have 6.5 sacks in his last 4 games (8 total on the season).

Of course, he gets flashy sack stats. What else did you expect from espin?

I don't mean to sound whiney...but Ward thus far has played out of his goddamn mind.

This is considering the fact that our secondary has not been the strongest in the world.

I -imagine- with Chubb? He's getting a lot of flashy sacks based on the fact that they have to double team Von Miller.

Chubb objectively had a good month. Playing off Miller is a given. The game that earned him that recognition was the Rams game. Three sacks against the best team in the NFL is worth noting. I don't care as much about beating up on the weak lines in Arizona and Houston.

If I'm John Dorsey reading the Espin article, I still confidently take Ward ten times out of ten.

The other thing is that the Chargers already have a great pass defense in the secondary. Their corner's are very good. So Derwin James has come in and filled a perfect role both for him and them.

I'm pumped to watch the Chargers when Bosa gets back. That is a team that is so good, with such a strong defense, that they may make some noise come playoff time.

Personally, I don't think we could have gone wrong there had we picked either Chubb or Ward. They're both going to be great players, and who wins defensive ROTY is pretty meaningless in the grand scheme of things.

Oh, I agree. Chubb has been great, especially the last month or so. Ward's just been better, and with a bigger responsibility. He was definitely the right pick for us, especially when considering need.

sorry for the idiocy in advance:

Did he return to the game Sunday? If not, I haven’t seen any updates regarding his injury.

No, he did not. There haven't been any updates yet.

While Chubb would’ve been nice and would’ve been great with Garrett long-term, we saw last game how bad this secondary is without Ward on the field. Yes, there were other injuries and it was a bad matchup, but the point still remains.

Seeing the way the other DB’s have played, I can’t imaging slogging through this season without Ward. I think it’d make a dramatic enough shift in the defense that the Browns might not have won a game this year.

I was a bit on the fence with the Ward pick initially. My guess is the Browns had he and Chubb rated virtually the same. DB was a much greater need, so you go with Ward. Now we just need to find someone else to stick across from him.
