Perhaps others have thought of this, and Im just slow...

There is an ongoing healthy debate over which present players should be retained and which prospects should be added to the 40 man.

But, at least for me, much of the equation has to do with which prospects are likely to be lost if not rostered. I never considered which present players might NOT be lost if they are DFAd.

When a player is DFAd, he is either traded or claimed on waivers...or his present teams can keep him by outright in him to the minors, unless the player has three years of service time, or has been previously been outrighted.

Most of the debate centers upon...

Zimmer*
Mercado
Chang*
Harold
Bradley
Johnson
Clement
Allen*
Mejia*
Moss
Hill
Hentges*
Nelson
F Perez

Lets focus first on the guys who are out of options. (*)

Any team that would pick them up would be in the same boat as us, having to put them on the active roster instead of protecting a prospect. How many teams out there would do that for Chang?

As for the others, a team that picks any of them has to prefer him to an unprotected prospect.

How many teams would do that for Harold, Hill, Nelson, Perez, Clement, Johnson?

In either case, it only takes one team, in a specific situation.

But the FO has to judge risk/reward for each one of them vs the chance of losing an unrostered prospect. Its similar to a trade in a way. A theoretical case in point...

If the FO judges that Tena would be lost to Rule Five and their choice is Chang or Tena....the question becomes would they trade Tena to acquire Chang with no options left? And part of the equation is whether the FO thinks we would even lose Chang if he were DFAd?

I don't think it matters if we lose Chang, although if he continues this home run a game thing I could Chang my mind.

Still a lot of games left for the guys on that list to make their case. I think Zimmer and Daniel Johnson are doing a pretty good job lately. And Logan Allen may have put himself on the map last night. I'd put him in the rotation the rest of the year. We don't need to see any more of McKenzie.

My post was not intended to begin yet another thread, debating the relative merits of various players and prospects.

Just offering the possibility of a different way to get into the heads of the FO...lol.

@CATS44 FYI: Your names with * is incomplete.. You listed 5 & it could be as many as 8 players.
  • Oscar Mercado is out of options for next season. He entered the season with 1 option & spent enough time in the minors to burn it.
  • Bobby Bradely is out of options for next season. He entered the season with 1 option & spent enough time in the minors to burn it.
  • Harold Ramirez entered this year with 1 option. Since he wasn't recalled until early May, his option could also be used up.

Ok, Marry Bradley, fuck Mercado, kill Harold.

I think Mercado is hanging by a thread. He is 4-for-55 when the count is 0-2, 1-2, or 2-2. Once the pitcher has two strikes on him Mercado is history, with the exception of 3-2 counts where he is 4-for-14. So overall he is 8-for-69 hitting with two strikes.

Unless he can figure out how to compete with two strikes he won't be of any use. Another problem is his slugging percentage is .355, which won't cut it for a corner outfielder.

It's mildly interesting that he's hitting .264/.783 as a left fielder, which isn't awful. It's better than Harold Ramirez (.263/.709). In center and right field he's 7-for-44 (.159). They need to leave him in left field if he is to have any chance to salvage his career. He's a plus defender in left but not so much in center. I just don't think there's a spot for a left fielder with no power to speak of who hits .260-something.
