I could be totally wrong on this, but due to acquiring Burks a trade just popped in my head that makes sense for both teams.
Washington needs to do something going forward, and Otto Porter’s contract will handcuff a lot of their possible future moves.
How about:
CAVS get: Otto Porter, WASH 2019 #1 pick
WASH gets: Alek Burks, JR Smith
Why for CAVS: Obviously the 1st round pick is the deal maker. Porter is young enough to still have an impact and Cavs have enough salary space going forward to pay him. By the time his contract expires after the 2021 season, hopefully the Cavs are in contention and not resign him + use the $28m cap space towards another great player to help contend.
Why for WASH: Alek Burks is an expiring and JR is only guaranteed $3.8 next year. Washington goes from having $27 million committed next year (plus what they paid their 1st round pick) to only paying $3.8 towards the cap. That’s absolutely crucial if they want to pursue a big name free agent like Cousins (Wall’s college teammate) or perhaps an even longer shot — Kevin Durant, a DC native.
Who says no?
I know this probably belongs in the trade forum, but since the Korver trade would have huge implications on this then I posted it here.
