Now I know we are not a free agent destination, so this is why we need to bargain hunt for the non "big name" free agents.

Here is a list of free agents 2012: http://www.hoopsworld.com/2012-nba-free-agents

Some players who I like:

Centers:
Omer Asik, Chicago Bulls – $1.9 million restricted---Very good defensive big, last year the Bulls D was better with him in than Noah. Bulls might not be able to afford him with big contracts of Rose, Deng, Noah and Boozer.

Ian Mahinmi, Dallas Mavericks – $0.9 million – Unrestricted-- I wish we would have signed him last year. Young big who has been really productive in most of his chances.

Small Forwards:
Nic Batum, Portland Trail Blazers – $2.2 million – Restricted ($3.2 million Qualifying Offer)---Not sure we could offer enough for the Blazers not to match--but love his Defense, and he has a nice three point shot. The Blazers D is so good because they have so many long/tall athletic players.

Shooting Guards:
Landry Fields, New York Knicks – $0.8 million – Unrestricted* He reminds me of a young AP. I think he might be a better fit here than in NY. I wouldn't break the bank for him, but for the right price I would like him.

Courtney Lee, Houston Rockets – $2.2 million – Restricted ($3.2 million Qualifying Offer)--good defensive player who can know down the three ball, depends on the money, may be worth making an offer.

Potential Lineup:
AV (8.4)-Asik (lets say 5M/yr)
Thompson(4)-Mahinmi (4M/yr)
MKG (my favorite player in the draft at the moment--5M)-Casspi (2M)
Gee (4M)-Gibson(4.7M)-Eyenga(1.1M)
Irving (5.5M)-Sessions (4.5M)

Not sure the dollars would be right/too much/ or not enough for each. Anyone see other young guys who we might be able to get due to current team's financial situation?

You're not interested in signing JJ? :chuckles:

Would love Batum but there is no way Trailblazers let him go.

with that starting lineup, another top 5 pick here we come! yikes.

i'm too lazy/preoccupied tolook at the list of free agents but i am weary about spending on any at this point. cavs play in a shitty city with an owner who isn't exactly the most respected in the league. already gotta overpay for rfa's if you want to scare away their current team but cavs would need to overpay even more. seems real bad at this point. ufa's would be a little different but would still need to be overpaid which again doesn't seem like a good idea at this point.

Pass on all of them. I pray I can see the Cavs eventually sign/draft a dynamic shooting guard. Delonte West and Ricky Davis and have been our two best shooting guards the last decade. Jesus fucking Christ that is depressing.

Two other C's to throw out there are Chris Kaman and Spencer Hawes. Not sure I'd want either or want to invest big money in either but they're two more options.
Kaman looks a little better if he doesn't have his current big contract. Not a huge fan of Hawes but he's been playing well so far this season. Don't know if he could keep that up though.

I would go for Batum, depending on who we draft (if we get a SF, there is no need for him)

Batum could be a huge player! Great character, great work ethic, great athleticism. He could be a possible 6th man of the year in a couple years. His numbers arent too good because he is stuck behind Wallace... The problem is wallace is a free agent this season. If he leaves, there is no way portland let's batum go (we will have to overpay him to pry him away even if wallace stays)

As for a center, i think we will need a jump shooting center. TT might develop a J some day, but we dont know yet and A big with range would open things up in the middle. I think Bargnani would have been the perfect fit (I know you guys dont really like him, but the dude can flat out score...), but there is no way Toronto trades him (well, with Jonas coming, who knows...)

Kaman would be a decent fit, but he is too old already.

Hawes has been playing great, I don't know him enough though... Does he have range?

Anyways, i think it will depend on who we draft! We could be tanking next season as well, though i doubt it... With Jamison's contract coming off the book, this team will have to spend to reach the minimum salary... Hope they do it wisely!

Keep in mind that Baron's salary still counts for next year against the minimum team salary. It won't be that hard to reach the minimum.

i dont see the cavs making massive signings in 2012 with the rookies and hopefully a few other picks they might be cautious of investing long term when they dont know what they need. i could see them making strategic signings of veterans to support the development of the younger players. if only they could sign lindsay hunter to show kyrie how to gaurd the point guard position.

I would have no problems overpaying a bit for Asik, our interior defense would be ridiculous. Draft a scoring wing, sign Asik, 2012-13 roster:

Irving/Sessions
Lamb or Beal/Gibson
Casspi/Gee
Thompson/Varejao/Samuels
Asik/Erden

I dont see both Sessions and Varejao still on the team next year. I think one will be moved for youth. I really like picking up Lamb or Beal, I am higher than most on Lamb. I also hope I am wrong, but the Gee might be the starter if we dont pick up another sf before then. Casspi might play himself to the reserve role by all star break. I really hope he comes around though.

I see no reason to trade Sessions before his contract is up. He is not a starter on a contender, and given he is still just 25 years old, we should look to resign him as our long term backup. I would only move Varejao for a decent pick or a quality prospect. If we can acquire Asik to be our starting center, then that means Varejao can be moved back to the bench, backing up both Asik and Thompson. To be honest, I never thought about acquiring Asik before this thread, but I think it would be a great move for the Cavs.

Don't want Kaman. Just not a big fan, the season he was an "all-star", he was just chucking a ton of shots up. Hawes was not on the list, but it does look like he is a free agent--he can shoot the 15 to 20 footer, and he has been rebounding well this year, he just may be a great fit with TT. And he will be turning just 24 this April, so he fits the youth movement. Thanks for bringing him up. (your response was what I was hoping for in this thread---not the same 3 guys who derail every thread.)

I do love Batum's game, I just don't think we will be able to offer enough for Portland to not match. He is long, athletic, great D and he can knock down the open three ball. I was really hoping last summer that we would somehow trade Hickson+ a 2nd or something along those lines for him---(this was before Portland signed another big).

Deron Williams, Ray Allen, Danilo Gallinari, Kevin Garnett (or Tim Duncan), Dwight Howard

New starting 5, all free agents this summer, except for Gallinari, who is restricted.

Get it done.
