he Cleveland Cavaliers went shopping with a stack of cash and the soon-to-be best player in the NBA in LeBron James. The Cavs knew the appeal of James and the money could help them land one of the top free agents available – most notably Ray Allen and Michael Redd.

But it was just like the guy who goes in the bar and puts his sights on the girl who everybody thinks is gorgeous only to waste his time chasing her and then finally giving up so late that the love of his life walked right pass him all night going unnoticed. So out of desperation, when his chances seem slim, he settles for the one that didn't look so attractive until he had a few drinks.

Sounds a little far-fetched, huh? Not really.

Joe Johnson was the best player available to pair with LeBron James – not Allen, Redd or Larry Hughes, the player they eventually signed. The Cavs did the right thing chasing Allen first because he was unrestricted and Johnson is not. But after Allen chose to stay in Seattle, they should have done everything possible to get Johnson – and not chase Redd then settle on Hughes, who will struggle in Cleveland having to play a lot without the ball.

Here's why:

Johnson is as versatile as LeBron – only without the jumping ability. He can catch and shoot from anywhere on the floor. He has the ability to create shots for himself and teammates in the paint because he has the best ballhandling skills of any 6-7 player in the league other than James. Besides, he can defend four positions.

Johnson's numbers are just as good as the stats of the other top three free-agent shooting guards and he is not concerned about being the man, which would have allowed him to become a good match for LeBron.

I compare LeBron to Magic Johnson. He does not need players who command the ball, but guys that can finish and flourish playing with him.

Magic had Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, James Worthy and Byron Scott. Jabbar was great, but at the tail end of his career Worthy and Scott were excellent players whose games were enhanced because they received the ball from Magic in their scoring zones and shot high percentages.

Allen and Redd would have worked to a degree, but I wondered about those two playing Robin to LeBron's Batman. I am sure that weighed into their decision to stay put.

Signing Hughes was a total stretch. First of all, he is not a consistent shooter. He shot a dismal 37 percent from the field and 21 percent from behind the arc in the playoffs. Most importantly, he has not shown that he can play without the ball for long stretches and still be productive.

Don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoy Hughes' game, but only when he is wheeling and dealing and being himself. I think he will struggle to find his niche with the Cavaliers.

Here is my directive to Danny Ferry:

- Sign players who fit with LeBron and do not command the ball.

- Re-sign Zydrunas Ilgauskas and continue to develop Drew Gooden.

- Find players that are not household names but can look great paired with a player like LeBron, who creates a double-team anywhere on the floor. Eddie House, Jon Barry, Donyell Marshall or Juan Dixon could help. These players won't sound off many alarms, but can flourish in Cleveland and cost little to your bottom line.

- Two players you missed out on already have been snatched up. Raja Bell and Bobby Simmons would have been ideal to play with King James. Those two could have been had for the same money you gave Hughes.

Ya, Eddie was speaking from experience.

How rotten. I feel worse for wear having read that.

Don't, Eddie Johnson doesn't know his ass from a hole in the ground if he did he would be writing for espn fsn si sportsline or something not hoopshype.

I got really mad when I read this. So I wrote to him:
To whom it may concern:

Hi, big Cavs fan here. Just wanted to throw out some comments about
Eddie Johnson's articles, I feel that there are a bunch of holes and
missing pieces that he's not really considering in the criticism of the
Cavaliers' front office.

First off, I want to say that I agree that Joe Johnson would have been
the best option out there. I would have chosen him over the Ray Allens
and Michael Redds. Surely over Larry Hughes and Bobby Simmons. His
point guard capabilities, ball handling skills, and uncanny shot would
have made the perfect fit alongside LeBron. He was my #1 choice.

But you gotta look at the big picture. He's a restricted FA. Phoenix
has said time and time again that they would match. It could be a
bluff. But I highly doubt it. He's an integral part to their
organization. They had to choose between him and Quentin Richardson,
and who would you choose? They made a great trade and brought in Kurt
Thomas to fill their void in the middle, meaning they could use the
money intended for a big man to sign JJ.

Then people throw out that "Oh, if Pheonix is so bent on resigning JJ,
why don't they do it themselves?" Business, business, business. They
just lowballed him to get him mad. JJ most likely wouldn't take
anything less than the max. Ray Allen got paid. Redd got the max.
Hughes got near the max from us. 14 mil/year contracts. JJ wouldn't
take less, he's obviously the most versatile out there. So, Phoenix
said, let him go sign a max deal with another team. They'll match. 5
year 70 mil is much better than 6 year 90 mil.

So, do we get infatuated by JJ because he's the best out there? Sign
him up to the max deal: 5 year 70 mil, just to get matched 7 days
later? In essence, Eddie's analogy works perfectly. Get obessed with
the most beautiful girl in the bar. Wait til the opportune moment to
walk up to her (July 22nd). Give her a good talk for 7 minutes. You see
other gorgeous girls walk by (Hughes, Simmons), but you have this one
pinned as the best. Then you look down and see that damn wedding ring
(RFA). She can take it off, but that burly 6'6, 280 dude you just
noticed behind her doesn't seem to kind to it. So what happens now? Ray
Allen, Michael Redd, Larry Hughes, Bobby Simmons are all off the
market. Who's left? Cuttino Mobley? Wesley Person? There goes the
offseason, there goes LeBron.

I think the FO is doing the best they can in the most educated way
possible. Yes, we needed outside shooting last year. But another
glaring, glaring problem was our perimeter defense. Larry Hughes, All-
Defensive NBA, I think can handle that fairly well. Even though his %
is lower, he still scored 20 points a game. If it's in the bucket, it's
good enough for me.
I also think we should have something lined up for the PG spot fairly
soon: Sarunas Jasikevicius. Great shooter and will fit perfectly with
his excellent court vision and passing skills. Poor defense, but Mike
Brown's system and Larry Hughes on the perimeter will surely help.

Have a great one,
-Tom Tosuksri
Cleveland, OH

PS: I just went through your directive: Raja Bell, in my humble
opinion, is nothing more than a role player. Lucious Harris type, in
his prime. But definitely not a starter. Hughes is a much more
versatile player.

And I agree that Donyell Marshall would be a great fit. Good scoring
punch, rebounding, and defense off the bench, along with reliability.
That's something Drew can't quite offer yet.

And this is what he wrote back:

Title: GREAT RESPONSE
Body: The only response I have is just because Hughes was left does not mean
spend 70 million on him. In three years they will regret it. My opinion.

So I dunno, feels like I kinda burned him.

yep you did Eddie Johnson's true inferiority is shining through. Nice job L you tore him to pieces.

great. what a weak comeback, in 3 years why not 1 or 2.

you need to reply back, and tell him to take off his damn roger brown goggles...

great letter- you gave him "THE BUSINESS"

because cavincali eddie johnson is reminiscing about his marriages they usually sgo downhill after during year 3 common mistake for a 17 year old journey man on a 2 bit site. heh..don't worry about this guy as you can clearly see his iq is the equivalent to that of a roll of toilet paper..

Forget Eddie, that fact that a former NBA player can only manage to write article for a site of HoopsHype.com's caliber is sad and that he doesn't seem to know what he's on about.

We all know Hughes was not the perfect fit, but we do know that he does help this team in many ways. The flaws in Hughes's game are obvious which is why we look to compliment them in other free agent signings in Sarunas. Another example of this is all the talk of moving Gooden for a compliment to Ilgauskas. You build around your best players. This is why we pay good money for LeBron, Hughes and Ilgauskas as they can dominate given the right support. This is why I was not concerned when we lost Boozer as he wasn't the right man to support our superior front court player in Z. Sarunas will be a solid addition for Larry and LeBron.

Hughes aint the perfect fit but with the situation we were in he was our best option.
