Bradley Cooper is making a movie adaptation of Dan Simmons' Hyperion, which I think is one of the greatest works of SF ever written. Can't imagine how he's going to take a story that intricate and convert it to a movie(s), but I'm looking forward to it anyway because it is such a ferociously excellent story.

Any other fans in here?

I have not read this before, but I am adding it to my ever growing list!

I've read a lot of sci fi, and to me it's still the best sci fi book ever written. It feels like every sequel got progressively worse, but that doesn't take away from how insanely good the first novel is.

That said, it seems like it would be more suitable for a mini series? I have no clue how they're going to film it as a movie. Maybe the best way is to combine the plot of the first two books and have the stories told as flashbacks through the main plot of the second book?

Having a single movie consist of 6 vastly different stories, which are basically 6 different genres, sounds crazy. But I really hope they do it justice.

It is probably my favorite science fiction novel as well. It is incredibly ambitious, and there's no way Simmons should be able to pull it off. But he does. Just ridiculously well written.

The problem I see is the same one you identified. Each of the separate stories is intricate and interesting on its own, so I don't know how you can divide those effectively over the course of a single movie and still give them the depth they deserve. But I love the book enough that I'm certainly willing to give it a chance.

Yeah... I think a mini series would have been the way to go. Have each one be a separate hour long movie basically. No clue how you get that into a film.

I think there is a lot of content to capture in a movie.. would risk dunelike failure.. so mini series makes some level of sense

Reread this about a year ago. It's amazing and really messed up.

Dan Simmons is my fave Sci fi author for sure. Olympos and Ilium are similarly complex and sprawling.

Nothing is funnier than how important a Poets work is in the far future lol.

I had no context when I read this book. I read it in 2011 or something and when I found out it was written in 1989 it blew my mind. The way he explains the tech is mind-blowing and holds up

Can someone sell me on the book?

Any chance this becomes like Harry Potter and it 8 2.5 hour movies over a 15 period? By the way it's described, it sounds like it might be impossible to make a good movie out of it. Really wish HBO would have made it a series like GOT.

You won't regret it - Simmons is really that good a writer. It's not an easy read in the sense that you can't blow through it like the latest Star Wars book, but it is a absolutely worth the mental investment.

I suppose, depending on the length, it would be like a half-hour dramatic program focusing on each of the characters. So I guess it is doable if it is well-written.

There is a Waiting for Godot element to the story, except that these characters actually do get to meet Godot, and the story does progress from there in the sequels.

It will be better than foundation if it is done well..
What was the general reception of Foundation? I haven’t read it but thought it was solid.

I’ll definitely keep watching Foundation.

I don’t think I’ve even heard of this but sounds interesting.
