If good enough, what game mark should we trade our '12 pick for talent?

I know some people are under the weird illusion that if we perform halfway decent this year it will be due to the veterans on the team.

Well, what if its due to Kyrie + Tristan and the energy and leadership that they bring to the squad?

Remember .500 gets you in the playoffs in the East and I can't see the Cavs being 15-15 at the 30-game mark and then all of a sudden dumping talent to make sure they don't get too good to miss the lottery. Being .500 at the halfway point of the year surely puts you in contention for the #7th or #8th seed.

Is that when we, as fans, can conclusively say its time for Gilbert and Grant to leverage the strength of the draft into a Rudy Gay?

I know actually playing to win was against the thought process of 99% of the board leading up to the season, but hey, I'd be more excited in getting a known like Rudy Gay if I knew we had a solid core to place him with.

I know the conversation is premature but the Cavs look different this year. They started the a little hot last year but the entire team looks look to be on the same page and having fun running Scott's system. If you're not a believer in what they've done so far, don't underestimate fact we've blown several teams out so far. Good teams dominate bad teams.

What ya'll think? What point of the season should Gilbert go for it if we're better than expected?

I think you're going to get hammered for this, but I'll answer the question.

We definitely won't make the playoffs this year, even in the east. We have played well, better than expected, but also had an easy schedule to start with. You can pencil in Chicago, Miami, Boston, Orlando, Atlanta, and NY for the playoffs unless they have major injuries or other serious issues (ORL trades Dwight, etc.). Two of Indiana, Philly, and Milwaukee should take the last two spots.

At the same time, if (and this is a big if) our pick is only projected to be in the 10-12 range (still not likely), I'd be open to trading it, but ONLY with top 3 protection, and only for a player who's still pretty young. I, too, favor having a sure (young) talent over a potential talent. However, I think it's unlikely that we'd be offered something appealing enough to trade it, so the question is probably moot.

Limpy,

I expect several pages of RCF members calling you metally challenged, at best. I want you to know that they have full license to get creative in calling you an ignorant fool. There is no way ANY team in the bottom half of the league would trade a pick in this upcoming draft. None. This is the deepest draft in years.

Go ahead fellas. No bans for personal attacks will be assessed. He deserves it.

Why was this moved?

Because I wanted to shelter you from getting hammered by the whole board, and because it is as much a trade thread as any other kind.

It was here or the dumpster. I am not sure I made the right choice. :chuckles:

Again, can you answer the question directly?

If we continue to be exceed expectations, at what record does it become in our best interest to trade our '12 pick for established talent knowing we have a solid core in Irving and Tristan?

30 game mark? 20 game mark? 25 game mark? 15-10 record? 18-12?

Understand what I'm saying?

This right here is why this is the best site on the net. By the way, I'm pretty sure limping puppy/Eli's eyes is actually the ghost of Ted Stepien.

I don't think you understand what I'm saying...

So if the Cavs end up 30-36 and just missing the playoffs, is that really worth keeping the #12 pick if you could have moved it at the deadline for Rudy Gay?

To answer the question... directly... you are a moron and it is never a good idea to trade the 2012 pick.

This is upcoming draft is the best in years, and this thread will be stored away on this site for your first murder trial. Someday, you will have nothing to live for and you will kill another human being. It's probably going to happen. At that time, you will likely want to try pleading insanity, because you are too stupid to cover up your tracks. Your fingerprints and semen will be all over that poor guy you killed. At that time, this thread will be the only chance you have at leading insanity.

So we are going to keep it.

You are welcome.

so everyone just assumes there is zero chance that any players under, say, 26, who is as good as a top 10 pick in the draft would become available in a trade at any point this year? That there are no teams in the league who will decide at some point to blow their team up to start their own rebuild and be willing to overpay for a possible lottery pick? I think if we're in the .500 ballpark towards the end of February, we look hard at making a move. If we're well below it, we move what we can.

The heat won 25 games, drafted Wade, made the playoffs, advanced to the second round, used assets to trade for shaq and 2 years later were NBA champions. Their rapid improvement made them the place Shaq asked to go to. He doesn't ask to go to the heat if they were a 30 win team hoping to get to 35 wins the next year. Boston used assets to get Allen and KG to build their championship team. The lakers used assets to get Gasol to build their championship team. We have a ton of assets. If Irving and Thompson keep progressing and we keep winning, is it so wrong to think of using one of our assets to bring in a proven impact player who can be here for years?

edit: I bolded the word overpay - that's the key here - often if you do the opposite of what all of the other teams want to do, you can get rewarded.

I won't stoop to the level of insulting the guy, but this might be the best post I have ever seen a moderator make on any forum, ever.

Wait, fuck it. LimpingPuppy, you are an ignorant jackass.
