Wait, how in the world do you think a team like PHX, ORL, CHI, or SAC where going to blow through great young assets on a Kyrie who was 100% not going to stay with those teams beyond his contract?
We were limited by the pressure of the public trade demand and the loss of leverage that goes along with that.
We were limited by the 4-5 team list of preferred destinations that Kyrie gave to Dan and then leaked to make sure it was known he did not want to go just anywhere, we were limited by the number of lotto type teams who knew they had little to no chance of keeping Kyrie beyond two years. Especially if they(already horrible teams) gave away several of their best players/picks for him
We were limited by the arms race with Golden State. What team that was at least going to try and put in a real effort to compete with GS(SAS, HOU, TOR, WAS, OKC) was going to do a talent for talent deal and just shuffle the deck, but make no real advance forward against GS. And none of those teams had anything close to the Nets pick to offer.
We were limited by the timing of Kyrie's request going public after the draft and after FA had already begun. Had this been crystal clear earlier, or like
@gourimoko suggested, the Cavs had been more aggressively proactive immediately following the season, we likely could have traded Kyrie for CP3 straight up. Jerry West is on eof the few execs from teams not on Kyries list who would have the confidence to deal for him and feel like he could keep him(especially considering West's history with Kobe).
