Does anyone know how to jailbreak a Droid X so you can get the wireless hotspot for free. I brought my laptop into work and planned on watching some NBA Playoffs while here and totally forgot that I couldn't do that on our wireless network. I'm working 2:30pm-12:00am and it is going to be a longggg slowwww night. If anyone can provide me a link or tell me how to jailbreak it I would appreciate it.

It's called rooting, not jailbreaking. I'll spare you the diatribe about why, because it doesn't matter, but you'll find more info if you search for how to root it.

This seems to be a decent guide for how to root your phone. There are some caveats that are mentioned that should be paid attention to. You might void your warranty for one.

you just need a program called z4root i have the droid x i use wireless tether. pm me if you need instructions

I can help you out here.

I have a Droid X and have rooted it, flashed a ROM, overclocked, and a few other things.

First, there are a bunch of websites to help you along.
For guides: http://roooler.com/
For questions, help, ROMs, community: http://www.droidxforums.com/forum/forum.php

What you are looking to do is get Z4Root for your X, put it on your SD Card, and then use it to root the phone (http://roooler.com/rooting-droid-x/).

From there, you can do pretty much whatever you want- remove the bloatware (assuming you got it through Verizon. Well, I'm sure other companies put a ton of shit on it, too), get ROMs, etc on it.

I'm pretty sure you don't need a ROM to get the wifi-hotspot, but you'll have to find a program for it. (Shouldn't be hard if you haven't found one yet. I use Barnacles Wifi Tethering. Has worked every time.)

If you want to do ROMs and overclocking, I suggest Liberty for the ROM (now on Liberty 2.0.1) and Quickclock Advanced for overclocking.

Good luck and have fun. (Oh and don't freak out if you think you've bricked your phone.. it's nearly impossible to brick a Droid X with all the info available. Though, if you do screw it up, it'll be a few hours of headaches to fix it.)

Don't use this. Use Z4Root as Loki and I mentioned. It's by far the easiest way to root your X.

(And damn, I got beat to the punch by two guys as I was typing up my post. Oh well.)

The easiest way to find z4root is go to applanet. I am currently running gingerbread 2.3.3 on my phone and WOW it makes the droid x fly

Yeah, I hear Gingerbread is fast, but I'm too lazy to go through all the work to go back to Froyo for the ROMs I like if I end up not liking Gingerbread. I've also heard it's not that great looking, but heh.

If you like greens a blues it looks great.... it is annoyingly like htc sense but i run launcherpro plus so i can customize it the way i like it. I used Rubix focused before that is great because it has 0 blur but nothing can be updated. I do agree going back to 2.2 froyo is a pain in the arse but going to 2.3.3 was well worth it. do you have applanet?

I have it, but to be honest, I don't use it much.

What is gingerbread? I am a fan of greens and blues lol

Also, I never got a chance to root my X. However I am taking a look at it right now. Bcortell, I see that this site http://roooler.com/install-cracked-3g-hotspot/ shows that you can use a 3G hotspot patch. All I want to do is have the 3G hotspot for free. Do I need to root to get the 3G hotspot, or can I just go with this patch?

Hey bcortell,
I am new at this and was wondering if rooting a Droid X can make it completely unlocked even when i travel to Africa?
Thanks for the help mate.

Sorry, just seeing this now. That's how it appears, but of the programs that I've used for wifi tethering, they all required SU permissions. Give it a try and see how it goes I guess.

Don't believe so, as rooting it doesn't affect the network. I believe Africa- in the 30 seconds I spent googling it- has a GSM network, while there are only a couple Verizon phones capable of being on that network (the Droid 2 Global being one of them).
