Jim Tressel resigns

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
Fickell was already the Interim coach. He was hand picked by Tressel. only now its the whole season instead of half the season.

Fickell has been on staff for nine years. the players respects him.

Keeping Fickell for the year allows the program to maintain some level of stability as it searches for a new coach.

What does stability matter. This season is fucked. Why go and win 7-9 games with an interim coach? Meyer could come in and do the same thing struggle to win games but in the process install his offense, get a year of tape and experience for the team.

Also, you're forgetting the impact the uncertainty of having an interim coach will have on recruiting on top of the impending sanctions. Why would a kid go to a school with a sanctions and no idea if the people recruiting them now will be the guys they'll play for??

Right, because saying "oh fuck it well were fucked anyway lets hire a guy now" is the message you want to send to recruits.

That's the attitude we want to see.

I'm sure the "oh well fuck it, were fucked anyway" slogan will be just what gets this program back on track.

Funny thing is if Meyer is the coach, he already had the perfect qb for his offensive system. Pryor would dominate under Meyer. Dont count out other major coaches like a Bob Stoops who is from Ohio.

Lol, really? That's the complete opposite message you'd be sending. Hiring Urban Meyer wouldn't look like a knee jerk reaction. It would show a program and a team moving and past a situation instead of prolonging it. It would show potential recruits that a decision has been made and there's stability.

Having interim coaches recruit and play a season is basically saying "well fuck this season, we're fucked anyway." We've got sanctions coming down suspended players and coaches who have no long term stability with their jobs. What message is that sending? If potential recruit comes in he'll say, "I really like Coach Fickell but who knows if he'll be here or anyone else on his staff." New head coach like Meyer, same situation a kid is going to feel far more comfortable and confident that he'll be around the program is back to being normal. Pretending that there's not instability within doesn't make it go away.

First of all we seen first hand what happens when you try to install an offense that players may or may not be suited for when Rich Rodriguez went to Michigan.
2nd of all Recruiting is already completed for this Season and I would expect a New coach will be hired by the time next season recruiting begins or Luke will be Named permanent Head Coach.
Keeping the coaching staff as is. reduces the chance of players transferring out.

Knee Jerk reactions are what crumbles programs. The sanctions will be released in the next few weeks. Keep on keeping on .

Ohio state will be looking for long term answers and will take a year to do so.

Urban needs to stay out of coaching and if he wants to return . his health would be a major concern. Its rather doubtful Urban takes another coaching job in the duration but a smooth transition once you have a new coach in place. is much better than a haphazard transistion season that might be needed to again another 3 years down the road.

I have far more confidence in the coaching staff in place. than some newcomer who changes everything right after everyones practiced a different scheme for the last 2 months.

Urban Meyer is NOT living in Columbus. Seriously people believe any rumor they here. Keeping Fickell is the right move for this season. He knows the kids well and can keep a very rocky situation relatively stable for this coming year. It makes no sense for an elite coaching job like Ohio State to be rushed to be filled. Next year we will be able to choose from the cream of the crop, assuming the NCAA doesn't hammer us in a BIG time way, and then you might likely see Meyer coming back to OSU as the head coach.

Well it's absolutely a knee jerk reaction, lets not kid ourselves.

For any of this to work you have to assume that Urban Meyer is actually interested in this job. Secondly, locking yourself into a scenario where you've only got ONE coach on the list, instead of doing any sort of due diligence, is not how things should be done either.

I agree and I think Pryor and Miller would both flourish and the team would actually be better off if Meyer was the coach. I was just trying to convey that worst case scenario is Meyer could come and possibly be just as unsuccessful as Fickell will be(imo, OSU is going struggle a lot). I think Fickell is a good coach but he's set up for failure. Why give a guy who small chance to be successful this year and know that the only way he'll be retained is based on how the team does? It's a pat on the back and a kick in balls at the same time. Just to clarify by successful I mean competeting for a Big Ten title, which I think we'll have at least 3 losses most likely more.

what could go wrong with putting an a type personality with a heart condition in the midst of a scandal, ncaa sanctions and five players under a 5 game suspension. I mean if Urban Meyer is going to get back into coaching.. its ideal to put him in a more stressful situation than he left.. right?

It's ok though, because this season is fucked anyway.

Meyer is absolutely interested in the Ohio State job. His name being thrown around a couple months ago is more than just speculation and coincidence. It's One coach who has ties to the program, lives in Columbus, has two National Championships, has experience with SEC teams which is our achilles heel. The list goes on as to why Meyer is the obvious front runner. To me, why delay the inevitable, when you have the perfect situation right there?

I love this.

Bill Cowher's been a perfect fit too, yet here we are two coaches later and he's still an analyst.
