I'm not sure why Pettine deserves a cookie for doing the obvious. I mean, even Johnny or one of his supporter's has to admit that there is no one to blame but Johnny for doing what they specifically asked him not to do and which he had agreed not to do.

My guess is that Pettine never really wanted to hand him the job anyways, but acquiesced in an effort to keep his job. As soon as Johnny disobeyed his order he had every justification he needed to have to get the FO on board with putting him at the end of the bench (if it was his choice I'm sure he would have been cut today) like I'm guessing he's wanted to do all season.
