JR Smith

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
We have so many guys that can play SG on this team, and we’re thin at literally every other position. This roster confuses me.
That's why I think making JR LeBron's backup would give us a lot more balance at least as far as the wing situation goes. I mean I get the argument for keeping JR as the starting 2 but if we sign Lance we'll be 4 deep at that position WITHOUT JR :conf (5):

I sadly don't think JR is going to give us much of anything if/when he returns.

This is what I am affraid of, hopefully he returns early (2 weeks early or so) so he can work his way back into game shape and get his shot back.

We need him back in form for the finals and that is possible if he plays the final month of the regular season.

I mean, if he had an injury to one of his legs, I might be more swayed to your opinions. He will no doubt still be able to defend, slash to the hoop, and play good team basketball. There's no question about it.

The only question is how long it will take him to return to form with his shooting.

Come on, man. Are you being hyperbolic?

I actually think the opposite is the case. My bet is his shooting returns very quickly. Finger injuries like what JR has, from what I've read, affect dribbling and driving more than shooting.

Plus, the two reasons JR is such a good shooter is his quick jump and quick release. If he had an achilles injury - like, say, Wesley Matthews - this would be a problem because it'd hamper the quick jump. If he had a sprained finger and wasn't missing time, but playing with a finger that is currently bothering him, then it could harm the shot because it would slow down his release.

If JR comes back healthy and not in pain, which I think is likely, the jump shot shouldn't be a problem at all. If he's still injured a bit, the jump shot will be a problem. But I see him coming back fully healthy, yet perhaps slightly out of shape, so it'll take some time for the dribble-drive and defense to return to 100%. Nevertheless, I think you're right, he'll be a huge help in the postseason.

It can take a while to find one's groove again. 4 months is a hell of a long time to be inactive. Adding the bizarre lack of cardio report and the emotional burden of his premature daughter, I'm just not very optimistic about JR returning to play championship-caliber basketball.

ESPECIALLY if he doesn't return until April. That's...essentially the playoffs.

Lets say that's true, and he doesn't return until April. That's still 2 full months until the finals.

You don't think that he can get into game shape and shooting shape by the finals?

Now that we have Korver, we won't need him to get through the East. He will have 2 full months to find his groove again.

And, like I said, he didn't injure his legs. There is ZERO doubt that he will be able to defend, slash to the hoop, and play team basketball AFTER he gets back into shape.

So, when you say "he will give us nothing" after he returns, that's just extreme.

My god the game where JR and Korver are both going off is going to be a sight. Teams might as well just quit. Different style shooters for sure, you have J.R straight bombing from anywhere, then Korver running all willy nilly disorienting everybody......

Then Channing and Love start bangin in corner 3's off the LeBron dime.

People don't know how good we're going to be once the whole team is whole and Korver is fully integrated. Don't forget that Shumpert has also been shooting the ball unlike he ever has before.

Lookout!

Kyrie, JR, Korver, Love, LeBron...

That lineup will be impossible to defend.

Agree with this. Does anyone remember how bad JR looked the first 4-5 weeks of this season, before he got injured? And that was just after a contract holdout that caused him to miss training camp. He was free to work out during the holdout and was not distracted by a tragic situation with his daughter. Not to mention in the beginning of the year where the competition is not nearly as tough as it will be in the playoffs. I just don't think he has the discipline to return from a multi-month injury and surgery in good enough shape to immediately play playoff level basketball.

As to those people saying that he will "play his way into shape" over the course of the playoffs -- that is just not an option in the intense competitive environment of the playoffs. Maybe in the first round you can let a bad player get minutes in order to try to get into shape, but not past that. We cannot afford to have a sub-par player getting a lot of minutes over the course of the playoffs. He needs to be at least very close to ready to go by the playoffs.

(As always would be very glad to be proven wrong on this).

Once he can start doing cardio again, it's going to really help him along. Yes, it's much different playing actual basketball, I cannot deny that.

I know the Henne God is dying to be in another parade this summer. I think J.R's little daughter pulls through, gives J.R the emotional kick in the backside to get him back to snuff.

The glass is more than half-full today.
