JR Smith

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
I can't be upset that they didn't use the JR contract,,and I thought I would be but they dished out 5 million to get Porter.(at least that's what i read somewhere)
I have no qualms about anything the cavs do when it comes to spending money. They always spend.

Taking a contract for JRs contract could actually hinder how we can use our expirings in February. The return might not be worth the flexibility.

I could see Boston deciding to want to dump Gordon Hayward if they can get a star in free agency. Let's say D'Angelo Russell says he will sign with them. They could send us Hayward and the Memphis pick for TT and JRs contract.

JR's contract is done on June 30. They won't know if they can get a star in free agency yet.

However the Cavs have contracts that can help them and others later. What if Kawhi leaves, Boston gets a Russell, etc and wants to add some vets to make a run in the EC while dumping salary to provide future flex? Well, a Gordon Hayward for Tristan and Clarkson can possibly make them better and clear space quickly for them - so you never know.

Teams alot of times know they can get a star before free agency starts. Agents are fielding offers right now and Russell could settle for Boston if he knows the Nets aren't bring him back. The NBA basically doesn't care about tampering this time of the year. The only tampering they actually care about is GMs or presidents says stuff to the media. The quiet behind the scenes tampering seems to be perfectly acceptable leading up to free agency.

Altman hinted they might just cut him to stay out of the tax but they have 9 days to get a deal done for either future draft picks or for a player that just got drafted from one of the teams looking for cap space to sign a fa but can't without dumping a bad deal. Cavs are definitely still in the mix and probably ahead of the pack to get a deal done. I could see Koby grabbing 16 from Orlando for Chuma Okeke draft rights for absorbing a year of Mozgov.
I also think they could pursue Nas Little from Portland for taking back Myers Leonard.

Yep. They did Jr a favor when the signed him to the deal in the first place.
If they find waiving him to be the best play, then do it and move forward.

He signed the contract. He sat the majority of last season. He still got all his money? What Grievance is he gonna file?

I wouldn't doubt he tried to get a buyout last season and was rebuked. Don't let him play one of his final seasons in the league. I'm not saying JR didn't bring this on himself. But when you spend a year refusing to let a player play, constantly talk about what an asset his contract is, and then finally waive him? I wouldn't be shocked if it happened.

Even the PA has no leg to stand on. He still got Paid. Gonna complain for collecting 16 M while sitting at home and doing what ever you want? Really man. Literally not gonna happen.

Nah -- there's no legal basis for a grievance. Even if JR thinks it was "unfair", and even if it was "unfair", Cavs were contractually permitted to sit him and refuse a buyout.

On top of that we probably did him more of a favor then us...It hurt us more by not being able to use his roster spot......

Without reading the entire 400 page CBA, I'd say more than likely you're right. But I also realize that professional sports follow a different set of laws then you're standard labor laws, so I'm curious if there was any language in it for circumstances similar to this.

While it's true, one never knows, I feel like I do kind of know about this hypothetical.

He has no basis for a grievance. The Cavs have an obligation to pay him, not to play him. He has not right to a buyout - and the buyout he was willing to take was a small discount. If he really wanted to get out, he could have offered to take a low buyout. He didn't.

The Cavs have paid him what he was owed in the contract. They only have a portion guaranteed for next year and JR signed that deal.

Same here. I don't anticipate it at all. Ultimately the most likely scenario for trades are probably ones we can't envision.
