I feel like there could be books or articles written on this to address this topic, and it still wouldn't scratch the surface. So - not really sure where to start, nor do I have the time at the moment.

But there have been tons of advances in the fields related to mental health and behavioral health (in research, therapy, medication, genetics), and at the same time, it's nowhere remotely near as advanced as the research and practice in more general medical and physical health concerns. That's partially because the mental health field is newer. And partially because the brain (and more specifically, the mind) is way more complicated than just about any other part of our bodies.

We'd benefit from much more funding going towards mental health research and services (and walking the walk with this, unlike most politicians who just talk the talk during election season or after a mass shooting); from many more medical school students choosing psychiatry rather than looking at it as lowly as they do other bottom of the barrel medical specialties; from more states adopting the right for psychologists to get extra years of training and education to be able to prescribe medication; from continued progress in reducing mental health stigma and increasing help-seeking behaviors and early screenings & interventions; and on and on.

Hey guys, the politics forum is three floors down, third room.

As a hospital chaplain I can assure you that these are some very dedicated people but they still are just "practicing medicine" it is not a fixed science.

Can this conversation be moved to a psych thread? I’d love for @Hydroponic3385 to elaborate and learn more from some of the other guys.

I do find the personalities of most doctors to share a common pattern of arrogance and almost resentment for patients. Seems to be particularly common amongst surgeons. Would anyone agree to this?

Opinions on thought replacement? I found it very effective after I was experiencing some very serious depression (I am not generally a depressed person) after two seizures in one day a couple years ago.

Long story short...My dad died when I was a young kid and I inherited the brain lesions that lead to a seizure that killed him. I have seizures every few years. When I have them, I become very conscious of my mortality afterwards...kind of fixated on it almost. The last time around I began experiencing panic attacks where I imagined I was experiencing auras prior to having seizures, upwards of a dozen times a day. They were getting debilitating. My brain chemistry was so fucked that I was experiencing these thoughts that were very similar to hallucinations. Hard to describe.

Anyways...I went to a psychologist/psychiatrist and she recommended thought replacement therapy. It worked immediately...like within days for the panic attacks and hallucinations (or whatever they were, presque vu or jamais vu may be a better description but still not quite).

I am curious how common this therapy is and whether it is effective for other conditions. I have recommended it to other people in conversation but do not know whether they have tried it.

One last thing...I found it very useful to be vocal to everyone around me that I was experiencing these things and to tell them I was going to see someone. I didn’t feel any shame about it whatsoever and I honestly felt that it made it easier if I ever had to see someone again to do it. I wish others could feel the same way. My wife has OCD and anxiety disorder and recently went to see someone. It made me happy. She has also begun to recognize that all of the women on her side of the family (two sisters and mom) have it as well.

Anyways...I’m fascinated by this topic and have a lot I could discuss.

Kevin Love is a Cav.

Discuss.

I'm really interested to see his passing in particular outside of an LBJ-dominant offense. Love, Cedi, and Sexton give you three guys who are really willing to move the ball. Nance probably fits in there as well, and perhaps Hill also. With time, that group should be able to develop some really nice ball-movement. That's assuming Hill gets to do that before he is traded, and Lue encourages them to play that way.

I think this group is going to be good for Collin. If they really move the ball like you say, it is really the perfect situation for a scoring pg that needs a push in the assist department.

I was really encouraged by how well Collin moved off the ball too in the Summer league. He looked like he does not have to have the ball in his hands to be effective. I love that.

I'll be very interested in seeing where Kevin's assist numbers are. He is going to get a lot more touches and Lue has said they are going to have to move the ball more.

I'd like to see Love moved back to the power forward position with a strong defensive center. I think that's how he would thrive the most. I'm glad he stuck around because I have a lot of respect for the guy. I was completely resigned to the idea that he was out of here so I'm a bit out of whack that he's still around. Hopefully we can maximize his strengths and cover his weaknesses. When Bron was here Love had to play out of his comfort zone. We'll see.

Agreed. It will be interesting to see how he fares as a "leader," so to speak. I'm sure he realizes there's additional pressure on him now that James is gone and now that his mental health battles are out in the open. If the Cavs aren't competitive, it falls on him now, like it did in Minny when he was the main guy. Interested in seeing how the talented young guys like Osman and Sexton play with him. He's a different player and person with more experience than he was in Minny, so I don't think we'll see that same kind of Love. But he's got to embrace the leadership role in this era and milieu, and see where it goes.

Eh, I think no longer having to perform under a "championship or bust" microscope or the fear of LeBron's harsh criticism will alleviate a TON of pressure on Love.

He's playing with house money, as his career has come full circle. He won a ring and signed his last big contract. He's respected by the fans for what he's sacrificed for the organization and accomplished for the city. He's borderline revered for his sense of loyalty after the other 2 members of the big 3 darted. There are really no expectations for him or this Cavs team; he just has to go out and ball.

Good question for me is "is this team as good or better than Love's Minnesota team?" I think Total Talent level may be similar or better on the Cavs, but the experience may not be there.

Plus he seems to be overall, happy. Like you said, the team we built accomplished it's goal. Beat the "best team ever" so maybe we should be considered the best team ever!

I really like him and Channing as bigs for Collin to play with. Their spacing will make him so much better and also force him to learn the proper way to pass to his shooting bigs versus his interior bigs, etc.

I think Love is going to excel in a "veteran leader" role.

I don't think we'll be good, but I think we'll develop our young guys properly. I think Collin and Cedi are going to be very good players. I think Collin will be just as good as like a Kemba Walker or Mike Conley, with potential to be better if he reaches the full potential. Think Cedi's ceiling is Turkoglu with defense which would be amazing for him but he likely don't ever be quite that good with the ball though man has he improved a lot at high levels in short amounts of time and he really is starting to look like a problem for teams physically out there . He's relentless and only getting stronger. If Collin works as hard as Cedi did on his body his rookie year he will be very good.

If Collin ends ups as somewhere in between Kemba/Conley and Cedi ends up as a Turkoglu w/defense that would be fantastic. But we would still need to be able to add a top20-25 player in the league type during the beginning of their primes to ever have a chance at reaching an NBA Finals.

No knock on them and their potential at all, but unless either of them exceed those already quite lofty and good projection, we’ll need one more player on an equal if not better than them level if we’re going to have a run of years as a top 4-6 team in the league during their early to mid primes.

No pressure Dan/Koby!
