Koby Altman

Do Not Sell My Personal Information
as Earvin Johnson, he's not shown he can succeed.

No offense, but this statement is ignorant.

Magic Johnson had his pro career cut short and ONLY EARNED $18 million during his career, and now he is worth $600 million. He's one of the wealthiest and most successful OFF THE COURT athletes of all time.

Does this mean he's good at running a pro franchise? I don't know. But, to say that he has "not" succeeded outside of basketball is pure ignorance.

Sorry. I don't believe money is a sign of success. His on the court basketball greatness opened many many doors to him, and along with his advocacy, paved the way for those investment opportunities. When you have a little scratch, and invest in under-invested, or forgotten neighborhoods, as he has in LA, you're going to see a lot back.

And yet there are so many who have squandered so much of it, often in a staggering short amount of time once their careers are over.

Really not certain of your angle here. If you want to claim that Magic is an example of a former player who will not succeed as a team president/GM, have at it. I mostly agree, though the gravitational pull of LA will eventually(2019? 2020?) net them some super star FA's

But unless you're willing to go in depth on his business portfolio and dealings, not sure how you're bring in some, "oh he's not a successful businessman or has no success beyond when he was "Magic" on the court vs. Earvin off the court" angle.

And one last thing. If you want to go the route of " oh well he had all these doors opened for him by being a star and having his playing money".....

I will still take and admire that path every day of the week over the kid who is just born into massive wealth and is able to manipulate and grow it with a cadre of advisors and insider opportunities from the time he/she is born.

Magic wasn't born into that. With his hard work, talent, and magnetic personality, he EARNED his initial "seed" wealth that he has since been able to capitalize on and along with Michael, set the blueprint for what LeBron is doing to an even great degree, as well as KD/Iggy and many other players who are focused on not just earning money in their career but building and growing wealth, both for their own gain and for philanthropic causes they believe in.

I said exactly what I needed/wanted to in the first post. He was an awful coach. He had a talk show which lasted all of three months and he just gave us two extremely young pieces to our puzzle on the wing and a prayer that they are going to lure two superstars there. Why? Because of the weather or the size of the market? And even if he does, it still takes more than two people to win. He drafted Lonzo, and his dad. He's opened his mouth numerous times and has been fined for it. He's foolish.

I love the guy. I didn't say he wasn't extremely likable. But buying a stake in the Dodgers and the rest of his dealings did not take genius. Even Ballmer, who bought the Clippers for $2.1B, is going to look like a god when they're eventually worth 5x that.

Alas, this is a thread about our GM. I won't be discussing this further.

Undo the previous regimes mistakes:

(1) Dump Mozgov by adding DLo
Magic clearly didn’t believe in him and wanted to head in a different direction.

(2) Traded Lou Williams for a 1st. He was good for them but really slowed down the progress of Ingram. He’s shown major improvement in his 2nd year.

(3) Clarkson was getting traded but they figured a 1st would be included. They added Nance instead while acquiring a 1st + expirings in IT and Frye. Not sure if sacrificing Nance was worth the risk but look at #7

(4) They use whatever assets + our first to unload Deng

(5) Drafting Kuzma and Hart late in the draft was remarkable

(6) Not a fan of Lonzo but it’s early. At least he’s not Fultz but Tatum or Jackson would been better picks even without hindsight.

(7) They have crazy amount of capspace to either sign 2 superstars or pull a previous regime and squander it on Mozgov and Deng but this is obviously the biggest factor and is TBD.

I didn’t know Dan LeBatard posted on RCF lol. Mitch Kupchak was gifted Gasol and Pat Riley had most of his success due to the Big 3. When the stars no longer aligned for them they were busy giving enormous contracts to Deng and Tyler Johnson. Magic hasn’t had that kind of blunder yet and has at least 2 more years to build a contender.

Definitely a tough one here —do I wanna talk financial investing with Magic Johnson or Allen Iverson ? Hmmmmm

This thread currently reminds me of this:

I was huge fan of David Griffin, what he did to build a championship roster. Koby Altman filled the role perfectly.
I liked Griffin but he didn't build the team with any defense.
He did a lot to help get that championship , but his plan was to build a offensive juggernaut like he wanted to do in Phoenix.
I don't know what plan he had..it would have interesting to see what deals he was working on.
Koby had a plan too and it wasn't bad this time.
Almost wish they had done the Suns deal and got Bledsoe to begin with but that didn't happen because they wouldn't include Jackson..I think that was the wrench in the deal.
I'm glad he didn't wait till this thing totally blew up before he did anything.

I much prefer the team we have now over Bledsoe and Jackson . Jackson would have been completely useless this year and he may never develope in to anything special . Bledsoe is a very nice pg with above average D but his head doesn’t seem in the game half the time .

Griff was great with player relationships but a pretty shitty gm. Too bad we couldn’t have reversed the roles and has koby as the gm and griff as the assistant.

Griffin forever deserves credit for the brilliant 2014-15 trade that saved our season. But with this trade deadline I was really glad to see Koby leaving behind Griffin's preference for getting old, no-defense players. Really tired of rosters ready for the nursing home and no defensive effort/energy on the court. Looks like we've left that behind for good, hopefully.

I like the mix of players we have now, a lot of the media types seem to forget that hood has playoff experience, hill has a ton of playoff games under his belt.

And on the laker kids they are both hungry and something I think is kinda overlooked is the fact that the three young guys have played in the west all their careers.

So they are used to playing more against the super elite competition. So coming to the east might be a cake walk for these guys.

Now we have playoff and championship tested vets, lebron, korver,TT,Smith, hill, love

As well as cedi who is breaking out as a rookie.
Plus the 3 western conference youngsters.
Not to mention green.

We got a good mix of players now I know I'm getting ahead of myself here and no one is giving us a chance at the title but I say once we get to the finals anything can happen
